Celebrating D
Wow.. what a week we had! The house was bustling with people and laughter, we ate, played games and our nights were spent chatting and reminiscing till the clock struck midnight.
To provide a little back story. We belong to a very small sub sect of the Shia muslim community. This bar mitzvah like celebration of adulthood is quite specific to our sub sect (I think) and is a very big deal and is celebrated with exuberance.
We had a religious ceremony indoors. And as it often is with events you host, you forget to take photos in the chaos.
There was a lot more food I have no pictures of and I don't feel comfortable sharing the religious stuff but all in all it was a huge success. We were exhausted. This event required the most prep and my mom and I cooked most of the food.
Our next event was the next day.. this was a more relaxed outdoor event. Fully catered and way less stressful.. or so we thought.
It rained on and off all morning and by midday the sky was thundering. There was no cancelling. We were going to have this party rain or shine..
The rain stopped. The guests started to arrive..
M's side of the family
My side of the family
Thirty minutes in and the sky opened up on everyone.. we hurried into the tents huddling under its protection.. laughing.
It got really dark as well.. and we hadn't really considered getting lighting as the party was supposed to wrap up by sun down.

Looks like a great event!

ReplyDeleteHENA! I missed you this summer. So much to say. First you are beautiful and that dress is gorgeous. Your family is beautiful. Congratualtions to D. Our boys had confirmation in the Catholic faith. But my boys would love your celebration and the Creamery cart. Great idea!
ReplyDeleteMust catch up on what you are reading. Again, congratulations to D and you and your husband for raising fine young men who love their mum (and dad). laura Send us the rain ... laura in Colorado
Thank you so much for sharing this part of your life with us. Congratulations to D, what a wonderful celebration, surrounded by family and love.
ReplyDeleteHolding a large gathering can be stressful without throwing in unpredictable weather on top of it! Happy to hear it all worked out! What a nice celebration you had!
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful celebration for D! What touched me most was not the food, although it certainly looked delicious, but seeing how many members of your family travelled such long distances to be together for this important moment in his life.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoy your family posts because there is such a strong feeling of togetherness in them. Different generations gather, cook, eat, laugh, remember old stories and create new memories at the same time. That is something very precious.
And somehow even the rain became part of the story. Everyone crowding under the tents and laughing together will probably be one of those memories you will still talk about years from now.
Congratulations to D on this important step in his life. I wish him a happy and fulfilling journey into adulthood, surrounded by the same love and strong family ties that are so evident in your post.
Warm greetings from Germany,
Anette
It looks like a wonderful event even with all the crazy weather! And is that a deer by one of the tents? The food looks delicious, at least what you showed! Thanks for sharing with us!

This truly looks like a wonderful event with such delicious food!! :)
ReplyDeleteLooks like you all had a great time! The food looks amazing.
ReplyDeleteDodging tornado warnings while hosting relatives flying all the way from Pakistan or Oman takes serious nerves, yet pulling off such a massive milestone celebration feels truly magical. Those homemade chicken skewers paired with Nicholas Creamery ice cream look completely drool-worthy. Huge applause to you alongside your mom for surviving that intensely chaotic weekend.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful family event - love the group photos!

It looks like you had a great time rain and all! Glad ya'll laughed about it and didn't let it ruin your time together.
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful celebration, and you can really feel how much love and family went into making it special. I had to laugh at the weather though, because after all that planning, having the sky decide to join the party must have been stressful. It actually sounds like those unexpected moments made the day even more memorable. The fact that family travelled from so many different places to be there for D is really something special. And those chicken skewers and chocolate mousse tarts looked like a serious labour of love. Your mum clearly deserves some credit too.
ReplyDeleteThe chicken skewers, chocolate mousse tarts and Thai food all sounded delicious, but the ice cream cart was such a lovely touch. I also love that despite the rain, darkness and all the last-minute stress, everyone still managed to enjoy themselves. Those are often the celebrations people remember most. You must have been completely exhausted afterwards, but I can see why you felt so blessed. I have shared a new post on my blog too, and I would love for you to stop by when you have a moment.
