48 Hours in San Francisco

Image
When we left Monterey, we first made a stop at M's uncle's house. We hadn't met them in several years and spent the day with them. It was a great time catching up and boy does his aunt know how to cook. Yum! The next morning we were off to San Francisco. We were issued many warnings about the current state of San Francisco. The homelessness is on an all time high as is the opioid epidemic. We were told to be very careful. Car theft and break ins were also a concern so don't leave anything in your car, we were told numerous times. We had seen a lot of homelessness in San Diego as well.. and while it is awful being close to New York it was not something we had not seen before. But we made sure to take precautions.  We stayed at the Hyatt in the Union Square area. Which was the perfect location because it was within walking or trolley distance of everything we wanted to do on our first day. No car needed.  First stop Chinatown. San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest i...

One Day in Lucerne, Switzerland

Image
Hello! Hope you are all having a nice summer and my fellow Americans' are enjoying a lovely 4th of July weekend.   As most of you know we were on vacation.. those who follow me on Instagram  know that we were in Switzerland. We had a wonderful time.. so absolutely beautiful.  We left on a Friday evening, I am a big fan of taking red eye flights. We try to get as much rest as we can on the plane, keep the first day light and make an early night out of it. It, to me, is better than wasting a day on travelling.  So we landed in Zurich bright and early Saturday morning. From the airport we walked to the train station next door, bought our Swiss Travel Passes and headed to Lucerne.  First a word about the Swiss Travel Pass . It's not for everyone but if you are doing a lot of travelling within the country then it might be just the thing for you. Before we left I calculated approximately how many trains, buses and cable cars we would have to take throughout the t...

Spring Break

Image
It's spring break.. and I am not excited.  We knew we would not be able to go anywhere on Spring Break this year.. and most likely a few more years due to it being during Ramadan..and we had made our peace with it.  Last weekend we went out with friends for iftar and by Monday M was not feeling good.. Monday night when we woke up for sehri he was really not feeling good, so he moved into the guest room and got a PCR test done the next morning. By Wednesday it was official. He had COVID. We had so far been very lucky and none of us gotten Covid. Well there goes that. Now I had to deal with a husband in quarantine. No fun. Then Thursday D complains of a headache and H has an itchy throat. Friday morning I found D curled up in my bed burning up! Had to unfortunately kick him out and to stay on the safe side kept H in his room too. So now I had three people in quarantine. I mean, come on. Two more PCR tests done and on Saturday we find out that while H was negative D had Covi...

Exploring Mount Hood and the Columbia River Gorge

Image
After Crater Lake we headed back north and checked into a hotel at Cascade Locks. Cascade Locks is a city along the Columbia River Gorge. The Columbia River Gorge marks the state line between Oregon and Washington. This was our view at breakfast, the Bridge of the Gods connecting Oregon and Washington. The plan was to drive down the Columbia River Scenic Highway and visit some waterfalls. Especially the famous Multnomah Falls but we found out that morning that the entire area was closed! :(  We sadly crossed off all the waterfalls and moved on to the next thing on our to do list while also quickly trying to figure out what we were going to do with the rest of our day. We crossed the Bridge of the Gods and drove into Washington heading to Beacon Rock State Park. Beacon Rock is 848 feet tall and is composed of basalt (the rapid cooling of lava). Henry Biddle purchased the rock in 1915 for $1 and during the next three years constructed a trail with 51 switchbacks, hand...
