Washington DC

The 10 hour drive from Myrtle Beach to home seemed far too long especially at the end of a trip when crankiness starts to emerge. So we decided to stop a night in DC before heading home. We left Myrtle Beach early in the morning grabbing breakfast on the go and we were in DC by the late afternoon. We spent an hour driving around pointing things out to the in laws.. making a stop here or there. Having already been to DC twice we were not as inclined to do a more a detail tour of the National Mall. After settling in at the hotel we walked towards dinner.. we have a Nando's back home and my taste buds have such fond memories of the chicken.. when I found out DC had a Nando's and it was a three minute walk away from our hotel I knew we had to go and it did not disappoint. nom nom.. sorry no pictures.. too busy devouring it all. The next morning we packed up and were ready to hit the road.. with just a detour or two first. When in DC breakfast must be done at Founding Farmers.....

Savannah

Getting back to our road trip, which we started with a drive down to Charlotte  and then a stop in Chimney Rock  after which we headed down to Savannah. The next morning we started with a sublime breakfast at the Mirabelle Cafe. It was a beautiful day, we sat outside people watching and enjoying our food, the peach was everyone's favorite. We didn't have a planned schedule, we hoped to just wander about enjoying the city and in all our enjoyment we ended up not taking many pictures. We also had a few hiccups. D had a bathroom accident, while in one of the squares something bit H's scalp and he ended up with so many itchy bumps in his hair which made him miserable.  We had delicious taco's at Tequila Town, we walked up and down river street, visited the Colonia Park cemetery, the boys enjoy Pete the Cat art work in a City Market gallery. We stood in a long long line to get a scoop of ice cream from the infamous Leopold's Ice Cream. Very good...

Chimney Rock North Carolina

The first stop on our trip was Charlotte but we did not have the time to actually explore the city. The time it took to get that far south from New Jersey and the time it would take to get back cost us two of our 9 vacation days. Our second day was spent at the Chimney Rock State Park just outside of Asheville, near Lake Lure. The same lake where the water scene from Dirty Dancing was shot. Chimney Rock has over 6 different trails for all different skill levels and most very family friendly. We explored three different trails while we were there. The first was the Great Woodland Adventure designed specifically for kids. The second trail was Chimney Rock There were a lot of steps.. over 400 but the boys were real good.. and the view was totally worth it.  You can see Lake Lure from the top.  We asked the boys if they were up for another hike and surprisingly they both said yes! The third hike was the Hickory Nut Falls Trail ...

Driving Down to Charlotte North Carolina

I hate packing. I am a good packer, organized - list maker - think of every possible scenario - pack everything we would ever need without over packing.. and when I am in the midst of it it is a nerve wracking process.. hence the declaration.. I HATE PACKING! Our initial drive down was over 10 hours long.. I packed the car with a variety of snacks, a bag of activities for each child and off we went early Saturday morning. I found a great deal on Groupon for these activity tables and they were a life saver.. though don't let that picture of H fool you he looked nothing like that through most of the trip.. argh. I had a license plate game printable for D which was a big hit.. the whole family got involved in finding plates even when we weren't in the car. For H the winner was silly putty and when all hell broke loose play doh saved the day.  We made pretty good time keeping our stops to a minimum at arrived in Charlotte at 8pm. As luck had it our room at a Marri...
