Read Across America
Last week was Read Across America week.
H's elementary school celebrated by getting a book vending machine. I cannot imagine anything cooler than this. Your teacher may award you with a coin for any sort of good behavior and then you get a free book!
He dressed up as Narwhal and his trusty sidekick Jelly from Ben Clanton's adorable books.. I highly recommend them. Not only did the kids love them but I loved reading them
Diary of a Wimpy Kid series created by author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney - because of the comedy
Last Kids on Earth series by author Max Brallier - beaucase of the adventure
They also had a 'dress like your favorite book character day'
Speaking of kids books I thought I'd share some books recommended by the kids
H's current faves are
Last Kids on Earth series by author Max Brallier - beaucase of the adventure
he is a man of many words as you can see.. he actually is.. no mute button on this kid but he was not interested in my questions.
D's current favs are
Everything Rick Riordan especially the Percy Jackson series - because of the adventure and Percy's bravery.
Mastermind series by author Gordon Korman - beaucase of the plot twists and cliffhangers
Land of Stories by author Chris Colfer - because it's a great fake reality to go to and forget about everything else.
If I were a kid, I would LOVE those book vending machines and dressing up as favourite literary characters! And, boys, good book choices! I've actually read 3 Rick Riordan books -- the Magnus Chase series involving Norse mythology. What a marvelous writer he is!
ReplyDeleteI would have loved having book vending machines and dressing up in my favorite character when I was a kid. It is awesome that both of your sons are such avid readers. There are so many fascinating books for them out now, I'm kind of jealous. I read a couple of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and they were very funny. Have a great week!!
ReplyDeleteThat vending machine is so cool! I loved reading as a kid and still do!

Oh my, I LOVE the narwhal costume.... and the idea of a vending machine for books -- very creative! And thanks for this roundup of books for kids. For one, it's reassuring to see kids enjoying reading, and for another, these are often some of my favorite books to read myself! Great smiles here, from everybody!

ReplyDeleteyour sons look very happy with books....
ReplyDeleteThat book vending machine is so neat!! My boys and I really enjoyed almost all of Gordon Korman's books as well as being HUGE Rick Riordan fans. My oldest son loved the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series; despite not liking reading most of the time. Another series he really enjoyed was the Treasure Hunter series by James Patterson and The Thirteen Story Treehouse series by Andy Griffiths.
ReplyDeleteThat vending machine is a great idea! My daughter read a lot of books when she was younger. My son...not so much!!!

ReplyDeleteWhat fun! My daughter's school took part too, but my daughter didn't want to participate in any of the theme days this year--she's feeling too old, I think. A book vending machine sounds really cool. I wish her school had one of those! I hope you have a great week!
ReplyDeleteI love to see kids reading and programs that encourage them to do so. My son read a lot of those books when he was younger.

This is a wonderful post and your son is so sweet. I love his narwhal costume, what a great idea to encourage children to become great readers. Thank you for sharing such a lovely event..
ReplyDeleteThe big array of books that the present kids have access to...... During my time it was Enid Blyton, Enid Blyton, Enid Blyton.
ReplyDeleteThat narwhal outfit is genius and I love the book vending machine.
ReplyDeleteDuring lockdown I used to leave a box of books on the drive with a sign for passers-by to help themselves, they'd often leave books they'd finished in return. I'd go insane if I didn't have access to books! xxx
That book vending machine is AWESOME! I've never seen anything like it! I would have absolutely loved that as a kid. As it is, I still enjoy perusing the children's book sections of stores because reading was so magical when I was a kid! :)
ReplyDeleteI love that your kids like to read! Love the idea of the book vending machine in the school.
