lately
The last few weeks of summer have slipped away.. and school has started.. we were hoping to cram in a bunch of fun in August but things don't always go according to plan. We had a trip to Florida planned (it seemed like a good idea in May and we were all newly vaccinated) and Florida refused to get with the program.. so bye bye trip to the Keys. :(
M got the boys a jungle gym obstacle course.. this was the highlight really. It was a pain to put up but the boys are really loving it.
We heard of this new Airbnb-esque website where you can rent peoples pools by the hour. We don't have a pool so we thought why not. This time the weather decided to be uncooperative. We rescheduled twice but we had days of rain and clouds.. plus lets not forget about Hurricane Ida. Thankfully we were unaffected but our thoughts go out to all those who were.
We also managed to make a trip to the zoo. We usually go to the Bronx Zoo but it ends up being a whole day event.. so we decided to try another zoo. Did you know New Jersey is home to 12 zoos? We used to lives close to Turtle Back Zoo many years ago.. this time we decided to check out Cape May Zoo. It is a free zoo. It was decent sized.. a couple of hours were enough. Unfortunately most of the animals were in nap mode. The giraffes were playful and sweet but it was the monkey's that stole the show. No pictures.. I had posted a video on my insta stories.
We also managed one last beach day.. it was right after Ida and there were branches scattered all across the beach.. there were also a number of dead fish in some areas. The seagulls were having a field day with the tides so low and the fish so close to the shore. Sometimes the seagull would drop a fish on the sand mid flight.. H took is upon himself to rescue a few.. I posted a video on my insta stories.. he was not at all afraid of grabbing the fish and tossing them back into the water.
And then just like that summer vacation was over. D started 6th grade!
We went to go visit his new middle school a week before school opened.. practiced opening his locker, ran through his schedule etc.
and H went off to 2nd grade!
A week or two after school starts our town has a large event at one of the towns parks. Local businesses, food trucks, tons of promotional freebees and some rides for the kids. We had just moved to this town the first time they had it and D was a wee one.
and here we are at Marlboro Day some eight years later. And that wraps up our summer.
Looks like the kids had a great summer time!

I hope you boys have a great year! They are lucky boys!
ReplyDeleteA poop emoji and a pickle, eh? Boys will be boys, LOL!
ReplyDeleteDespite the disappointments in travel plans, it sounds like you still had a fun, busy end of summer. I'm glad to know Ida didn't cause y'all any trouble. I wondered at the time.
ReplyDeleteLooks like a fun time!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I had no idea you could rent a pool by the hour on airbnb!!! So cool!

the boys are getting so big and both look great. our town does not have "a day" but brielle does and we always go to that. we missed it this year as i was still in quarantine. our pool sat idle all summer, we opened it, we closed it and did not get in one swim. too bad i did not know you were looking for one, you could have come any time. i mentioned it to several friends but i don't think anyone took us up on it!!
ReplyDeletei have visited the cape may zoo several times, we like it!!
florida would not have been a good destination!!
Well, it sounds as if you had a wonderful summer for your boys despite the difficulties! Happy new school year to both! My Flynn is in 6th grade too. Hard to believe! Have a cozy evening!
ReplyDeleteI think that last photo is my favorite. A precious capture!
ReplyDeleteOh wow! The boys are in 6th and 2nd grade now? Time sure flies by, eh? And love that jungle gym. I want one too! :D
ReplyDeleteI think we are all holding onto the last bits of Summer. I can't believe you have a 2nd and 6th grader!!
ReplyDeleteThe kids look so happy. You managed to give them a real good time despite your other plans not working out.
ReplyDeleteWhat an interesting idea to rent a pool that way. I think that's brilliant...too bad the weather didn't cooperate.

August can be like that..so fleeting! You still managed to fit some fun things into the month. That jungle gym looks challenging and perfect for your boys. I've heard good things about CM Zoo. That's funny about throwing the fish back. How sweet! So another school year begins!
ReplyDeleteboys truly had a great time:) they look so cheerful and adorable;)
ReplyDeleteWe scrapped plans to visit Florida as well. So not worth the risk. Looks like you guys fit in a good number of fun activities before your boys went back to school.
ReplyDeleteThe Zoo is always a wonderful place to visit. And the beach sounds fun too!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you got these visits in before the kids started school. Sixth grade was a good school year for me. Second grade was also. I had a good teacher that year. I hope you all have a good time at the town event that you attend every year. Sounds fun with the food trucks and rides.

Very colorful summer holiday with lovely activities for the kids!
ReplyDeleteI wish we had the rent a pool thing that sounds like a great idea in the summer heat, haha! Our new place doesn't have a pool but our old place did and I miss it sometimes!
ReplyDeleteHope your week is going well :)

That's such a shame that your trip to the Keys couldn't happen because of COVID. Looks like you found a lot of other great places to visit closer to home though. I'm loving that obstacle course. Wish I had had something like that for my son when he was younger. I hope your boys' school year is off to a great start!
ReplyDeleteSounds like you guys had a wonderful summer! The obstacle course looks fun, I can see why the boys the excited for it!

you really squeezed in as much summer fun as possible! Your older boy is looking older (eep!). Thank you for sharing a slice of your life with us, I love seeing what you do and watching your sons grow up.
ReplyDeleteIf there was a caption for this summer, it would be "Cancelled Plans Again," thanks to Covid spikes, and rainy, hot weather. We had our share of cancellations, too. Sorry your Florida and pool days got cancelled. Looks like the jungle jim saved the day. Good Luck to the boys in school!
ReplyDeleteHappy to hear you weren't affected by Ida... that looked pretty scary.
ReplyDeleteThat pool rental is such a cool concept! Hope you boys have a great school year!
