lately

lately things have been busy.. a lot more busy than I like my summers to be and with a lot more morning alarms than I would like.

Our first two weeks of July were family filled. My parents left, my in laws arrived (they live with us for parts of the year) and then my sister in law came for a visit with her two kids.. they are very similar aged to ours which meant lots of love, laughter and lots of fights. 




The next week and the week ahead are full of classes. D is taking an intense tennis class bright and early every other morning.. hence the need for an alarm. And then both boys are doing their annual summer swim crash course.. but thankfully things will all slow down as the month ends and then we can take a little break.. with no alarms. 

How's summer been treating you?

Now a question for my crafty friends.. my son attended a paint by arrow class. Paint filled balloons dangled over a canvas and he shot arrows at them. 


This is the canvas he created. Now I was thinking this could maybe turn into a pillow or something.. is there a way to seal in the paint? Don't know what kind of paint it is.. but it seems water based.. Any ideas?

That paint-by-arrow work of art is amazing! I don't know how to seal in the paint though I bet the staff might know how to at an art supply store or a craft store.

What a cool piece of art! Could you spray with clear polyurethane maybe? It sounds like lots of fun but I agree, less alarm clocks are the best part of summer!

It's good the kiddos got to spend time with their cousins. Sorry, I can't help with the arrow art, but the suggestion about asking at the craft store was a good one. They'd probably know.

Sounds like lots of fun was had, well worth the early morning alarms!
Especially if you've got some quieter times lined up in the near future.

First, if you can find the person who did the project, ask if it is water-based paint and more like a watercolor or an acrylic. An acrylic you wouldn't need to seal -- when it dries, it is secure. A water color, nope. I'm not sure about tempera, which is what they often use for projects with kids. When you know (if you can) go to an art store (versus a craft store) and ask someone or call your nearest art department and ask. For pastels, there is a fixatif that one can spray on, but if you are doing a pillow from it, not so sure how that would work. (They are a bit smelly). You might be able to Scotchgard it - I know that helps with a lot of furniture to provide a coating. So, that's another idea -- make it into a pillow and then take and ask an upholsterer what they would recomment and if a Scotchgard would work. Good luck.

Please check to see if the paint is safe for human contact. Polyurethane is not safe to inhale. I wouldn't want it on my skin either due to off-gassing. A wall hanging would be nice once it has aired outside or is protected by glass if framed.

You have a Jackson Pollack in the family! I hope you will display his art in a way for everyone to enjoy.

hi girlfriend...i would frame and hang that canvas, it is beautiful and hopefully a great memory for him!!

busy summers, that is always a quandary. there are so many awesome things to do but it can become exhausting!! summer for me, 4 weeks in the hospital and rehab, i have missed everything!!

i enjoyed the pics of the kids!!

What a wonderful painting your son made. It would look very nice on his wall like a tapestry. It looks like the kids are having fun being together with rides, frosty drinks, and companions their own age. A little fighting is bound to happen. Mia and Francesca are best friend cousins, but sometimes they want the same toy that the other one has. ; )

I know you can use Modge Podge to seal things. I would try that. I have used it on a ton of things. Sounds like a fun July so far!

Sounds like such a fun summer! I don't mind if I have to set an alarm - most days one of the kids wakes me before it goes off anyway, haha! :)

It would be so fun to turn the art into something - hope you find the answer, I'm not sure sorry!

When the wall between our family room and kitchen see details here came down we had to deal with two different flooring, old carpet and newish laminate. The plan was to find the same laminate.. we found the box in the basement, how hard could it be? Harder than we thought.. that particular one had been discontinued.. and finding something similar was not an easy task..  Finding a flooring that was kind of close but not close enough would seem like a mistake.. so we decided to go different, this way it would seem like an intentional design choice.. D's Amazing Race Party

Last weekend our eldest turned 9.. and we threw him an amazing race birthday party! As with all the boys other parties.. I bought a plain white cake from Wegmans and let D decorate it himself. We had a total of nine kids.. they picked bandanna's out of a bag to create 3 teams. First Task Not all the kids knew each other.. they were too amped up with the idea of winning that they couldn't manage to calm down and read the clue.. so we had to really guide them through it.. they made mistakes and we let it go.. it seemed a tad chaotic..  Second Task I had 33 little medicine cups filled with M&M's and Goldfish crackers.. 6 of them had stickers on the bottom. The first two teams found the sticker in the first try... what are the odds!? And the third team had to eat a lot of snacks before they finally found their sticker.
