Ski Break on Plattekill Mountain
Happy New Year to you all!
We picked Plattekill Mountain, a small mountain.. not too crowded. Drove up Saturday morning and in true 2020 fashion they were closed. They had a storm a day before and were still working on making fresh snow. We got no call or email.. the girl stated they post updates on their social.. oh well. We were in the middle of nowhere.. everything closed due to both Covid and it being Christmas weekend and our Airbnb not available till after 4pm. So we just drove around.. got some lunch at a really sweet little place in Delhi called Blue Bee Cafe.
We had mastered the bunny hill last season and were hoping to get on to a beginner slope this year.. we hired an instructor to guide us our first time on a bigger hill and also to brush up on our skills.. We got a absolutely wonderful instructor. He was great with the kids and gave M and I some good tips. But of course 2020 had to come an screw us over again.. all beginner hills were closed.. The storm damage was too great so it was either bunny hill or advanced terrain. So the next two days we were stuck on the bunny hill.
We embraced it and made it a positive experience.. you gotta learn to roll with the punches especially in a year like 2020. But a bright spot.. our super amazing instructor offered to take the kids up on the advanced terrain. Seems scary I know but his reasoning was if something happens he can catch them, pick them up, do whatever needed to be done to safely bring them down the hill. He advised against taking us up for a trial because, well, he can't exactly scoop us up mid ski.. and if we fall and get hurt we won't bounce back as quickly as a child would.
The boys were psyched so up they went.. and they made it back down as well.. they came down slow so it took them some time.. had a few tumbles but they did it!
Back to the grind.. today's our first day back to routine. The kids are still doing virtual school.. M is still working from home..
We had a nice winter break.. we went away for a couple of days.. we rented an Airbnb in Upstate New York. It was a very last minute decision so the pickings were slim but the place was clean and that was the most important part.

ReplyDeleteThat's so wonderful you were able to get away like this. And that's so impressive that the kids skiied down an advanced slope.

ReplyDeleteHope that you had a great weekend! Ours was a nice quiet one at home with the 3 day Brisbane lockdown due to there being a case of coronavirus outside hotel quarantine, but lockdown ends tonight as there have been no more cases :)
