We have been back a week but things have been crazy busy.. where did the week go? I haven't even begun to sort through all the pictures we took. Continuing in the past few weeks fashion we went from North Carolina to South Carolina made it all the way down to Georgia and made our last stop in Washington DC.

Thanks for being honest about how sometimes my knitting content goes over your head. When I knit gauge is important. Gauge is measured by stitches per inch. Knitting stitches look like V's. Usually a designer will have figured her gauge by knitting a swatch of fabric. She tries to cast on her needles a number of stitches to meet 4" in length. She knits one side and then purls the next row; this continues back and forth until she reaches 4" height wise. The swatch is then soaked in a wool wash; wool wash enables you to not have to rinse because agitation of the fibers can happen, causing felting or pilling. The swatch is pinned down and air dries. When the drying is done, a ruler for example is taken and measures out horizontally how many V's appear in 4". The number is divided by four and then the answer is how many stitches per inch. So with this magic number a designer uses it to figure out the math for cast on needed to start the design.
Gauge is especially important to me for sweaters, shawls, and socks because you want those items to have a certain fit or in this case, my shawl to have a certain height and wingspan. The gauge of Pioneer Girl is 6 sts/in. I'm supposed to end up with 303 stitches in The Radness. 303 divided by 6 = a wingspan of about 50.5". If my gauge was 5 stitches per inch instead, it would be about a 60.5" wingspan, a larger one. If my gauge was a number bigger than 6, the wingspan would be smaller.
The shawl I'm not too worried about gauge wise but because I'm using different yarns, I don't want the lace applied edging to be tighter than the speckled section. I hope this helps. ^__^ Teacher in me; can't help it.
