lately

We are currently toward the tail end of the holy month of Ramadan.. as of today we have one week of fasting left. For those of you not aware of what Ramadan is, well it is a month where we fast from dawn to dusk.. so at present approximately beginning around 4 am and ending around 8:30 pm. During the fast no food of any kind is permitted. And while I know the hours seem long it's not really all that hard.. it takes a day or two to get used to it and then you can hardly tell.. I personally miss food just because food is awesome but there is not a lot of I'm too hungry to function type of scenarios.

We are also celebrating a birthday this month.. D turned the 6 on Thursday :) Since we were all fasting.. minus the kids of course.. we will be taking a rain check on the family celebrations.. but the big boy started his day off with some whip cream covered MnM pancakes. And D continued the celebrations with an ice cream party at school.

Friday was D's last day of school.. in a few months we he starts public school and I'm not sure if I'm ready for that just yet :( When I asked him if he was sad he asked 'sad about what?'

 Saturday was graduation..

Each child was supposed to create a centerpiece for graduation about themselves from infancy to now..

But before the year ended D's kindergarten class put on a little art show.. below are some of the class's work and the ones that D did.

Van Gogh

Jackson Pollak

Piet Mondrian

Monet

 Picasso

  3. Congratulations to the little graduate! All of that art is unbelievable and amazing!
I would imagine you'd have to keep yourself awfully busy during the day to not think about being hungry. And making breakfast for the little ones while fasting?!?! Sounds like torture to me. ;) It's like being on a diet and seeing a commercial for a pizza (or something equally delicious). I hope you enjoy summer break!

It's actually not that hard.. the first one or two days.. but your body adjust and you very rarely feel the hunger.

  12. So sweet Hena. Your little graduate is precious! How exciting to start big school.

I'm glad you shared this about Ramadan. I don't know a thing about it and it's interesting. Fasting all day sounds hard to me.

    1. Children do not generally fast.. one may try an occasional fast on a weekend or when the days are shorter. Most children start fasting regularly after they hit puberty.

  19. he is such a sweet loving soul!!! happy birthday! I was surprised that Ramadan moves around the calendar. I think it would be easier in winter when the days are shorter compared to the summer. My daughter and son in law in Santa Barbara squeezed in a San Diego visit a week before Ramadan started since their friends observe Ramadan and eating out in restaurants during the day was on the schedule. I'm Catholic and the only observance we (I) do is no meat on Fridays during lent. However the church allows fish and seafood so it's really not hard to do at all.

    1. The Islamic calendar is lunar and thus falls back 11 days every year.

    1. Well you're belief may not be completely unfounded.. there are many countries whose current summer days are so long making sun down 10:30 pm and later.. much closer to midnight. Thankfully our days are not that long.
