In My Attic

I have been meaning to write this post for quite some time. Remember when I told you we ventured up into our attic only to find a whole bunch of crap along with a few interesting surprises. I didn't want to just post a bunch of pictures for you, I wanted to know more about our new finds and share with you a little history.

These first two paintings are oil on canvas reproductions French painter Maurice Utrillo who specialized in cityscapes. By the age 21 Utrillo suffered from mental illness and alcoholism, he was encouraged to paint by his artist mother and it was painting that helped him deal if not overcome his illness. Both paintings are of the Montmarte area of Paris where he was born and raised.

Another painting we found lacked a signature so it was harder to identify. After much googling I discovered it is called The Hay Wain by English painter John Constable. Born in Suffolk he is known primarily for his landscapes mostly of Dedham Vale, where he lived, now known as Constable County. This particular painting is now among the most popular and valuable in British art.

This painting I have unfortunately still not been able to identify. Any tips?

Next up are these big super heavy dudes. Turns out they are 3D ceramic Spanish Conquistadors also known as conquerors or explorers depending how you look at it.

This was D's favorite find.. a vintage wooden hide the telephone box. Is it me or does any one else think this guy could be a kooky character in a Disney/Pixar movie? 

and how could we forget our large tribal mask sculpture. It big, wooden and free standing and looks a little sad to me.. like those theater mask icons. 

This large metal ship was our most nostalgic, trip down memory lane discovery. My parents used to have a boat just like this when we were younger.. it was larger and hung on the wall and was lost in a move. They had even tried to find one similar to it.. some twenty years ago.. 

and at last we come to the last two pieces.. two tall ornate lamp bases.
