Maui, Hawaii part 2
Hello May?
Continuing with our Maui adventure.
Day 8
Since our day spent on the Road to Hana involved a very very early wake up, the next day we woke up with no alarms. We are generally early risers but we took the time to just lay in bed and relax. Once we were up we headed to Whalers Village.
Whalers Village is a shopping and food area nestled in the midst of the line of resorts in Kaanapali. We got in the long Island Vintage line to grab some breakfast. While Whalers Village was convenient it did not have a lot of options and we missed the endless choices available to us in Waikiki.
We took our treats and had breakfast on the beach.. and H in a tree. Then we walked a bit on the beach before it was time to board our boat for a snorkel and whale watching tour.
I can not rave enough about this trip. This little dude above did not want to get out of the water. I am not big on snorkeling and stayed on the boat. I should have gone in.. I could have but I chickened out. The crew was incredible.
They had an underwater photographer on board who took some shots of the boys underwater
Once everyone was out of the water we were treated to a delicious lunch and we set of to find some whales.
Every year thousands of North Pacific humpbacks migrate about 3,000 miles from Alaska to the warm, shallow Maui Nui Basin to mate and give birth. Making it one of the longest mammal migrations on Earth.
The population has recovered from near extinction to over 11,000 in the Central North Pacific.
Humpbacks do almost all their feeding in nutrient-rich Alaskan waters during the summer. While in Maui’s low-nutrient tropical waters, they do not eat at all, living entirely off their stored blubber.
While we did not see the whales breaching.. we did see many tales and fins and misty spurts from their blowholes.
The population has recovered from near extinction to over 11,000 in the Central North Pacific.
