Eid Mubarak!
We celebrated Eid last week. What a wonderful month it was. While bodily you feel exhausted it is fulfilling and deeply satisfying in all other ways. I am happy it is over and I can drink my coffee again and get a full nights sleep but I also miss it already.
For those of you not in the know.. above is some basic facts about Eid. I posted a more detailed post about it a few years ago which you can check out here and I am always open to any questions you may have.
Traditionally the four of us always go out for a big breakfast on Eid morning after our Eid prayers.
On Eid instead of gifts, Eidi is given. Adults give children an Eidi (money). It extends to adult sons giving their parents an eidi, parents giving their adult daughters eidi's and adult brothers giving their sisters eidi's as well. Historically, women did not work or have their own money so an Eidi was a way for women to get financial freedom and the ability to save or spend the money any way she chose. It is a tradition most still follow today.
As the kids were already raking in $$$ we took them book shopping instead.
On the second day of Eid we hosedt family. Once upon a time it was just the four of us.. but in the past few years M has had three cousins and their families move to our state and it has been so nice having more family nearby.
Don't have many pictures as I was sick.. and the first guests showed up before I had even changed and while it may have started chaotic.. we all had a wonderful time.. laughed so hard my head hurt.. literally. Eldest got a ton of love.. or torture..
On the third day of Eid we got dressed up yet again.. Every year is different.. sometimes Eid passes by with such little festivities it makes us a little sad.. this year is filled to the brim and I need a nap.
By the time we got in bed it was past midnight.. we were wiped. But it was nice hanging out with friends.. reminiscing about times past and making plans for the future.
Sunday we woke up with leisure. Had a quick bite and then headed to New York. We had tickets to a Rangers game. M got these back when we didn't know our Eid weekend was going to be so busy. It was nice being just the four of us.
And so came to end the festivities and I welcome the routine of a Monday.

Thank you. I was not aware of it

Happy Eid! Interesting about the Eidi providing some financial freedom for women back in the day. And giving books to your sons is a great idea. Speaking of sons, I see your oldest is now sporting his first facial hair -- getting so grown up!
ReplyDeleteEid Mubarak!
ReplyDeleteGlad you got to enjoy so much laughter and connection.
Absolutely fascinating! I love the way you chose to celebrate by giving books!
ReplyDeleteThis is a wonderful post, Hena, and it sounded like a terrific celebration with many fun and family things on the schedule. I appreciated some of the traditions, too. In fact, I shared this post with Rick because he was asking me about Eid the other day!

Eid Mubarack! I loved learning about how you and your family celebrate.
ReplyDeleteThat's cool that you and your eldest are reading some of the same books, now. I can look forward to that as my great-niblings get a little older.
You and your youngest have twin smiles. Look so much alike!
ReplyDeleteGlad to know what to wish my Muslim family - Eid Mubarak. And interested to learn that this holy time shifts by several days each year. I remember the year my daughter married her husband Mustafa, the family was just finishing the fasting of Ramadan and everyone was especially excited for the wedding meal!!
ReplyDeleteIt is nice to have family close on the holidays. I think they become even more meaningful. My daughter was here this past weekend with her children. When we would do something extra fun (or crazy), she would say we were giving the kids a CORE MEMORY. Love that idea!!
Looks like a great time was had by all! Hope you all enjoy some relaxing, quieter time in the aftermath of all that celebrating. :) Thanks for visiting one of my lists this last week!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like y'all had a wonderful time! Thanks for sharing! :D
