San Juan Puerto Rico
Last week we spent four warm and sunny days in Puerto Rico!
It was while planning this trip that I realized how large Puerto Rico really was, we only explored a teeny tiny portion. We are already talking about making a second trip.
On our first day we arrived in the early afternoon and were happy to hear that our room was already ready.
It was while planning this trip that I realized how large Puerto Rico really was, we only explored a teeny tiny portion. We are already talking about making a second trip.
On our first day we arrived in the early afternoon and were happy to hear that our room was already ready.
When visiting somewhere new I like to try the local cuisine. It was hard in PR. We do not eat pork and not a fan of seafood so it limited our choices a bit.
What we did eat
alcapurrias - green plantain dough stuffed with meat
tostones - deep fried plantains
We started the morning with breakfast at Mercado La Carreta.
and then we headed to our first stop San Cristobal Castle which is a fort and not a castle. Thanks to the Puerto Rican government and the Puerto Rico Tourism company, the fort and all other sites under the US Government Park Service were kept open with their own private funds and free to all visitors.
For those not in the know.. Puerto Rico is a US Territory. I was surprised or maybe not - to learn how many Americans were ignorant of this fact.
Castillo San Cristóbal is considered the largest fortress built in the Americas, built between 1634 and 1765 to defend the city from land attacks
From here you can see the walls of San Juan as well as El Morro Fortress in the distance.
The fortification was impressive. Spain ruled the Americas especially from 1492 to 1898 especially part of the Caribbean and Central America. They, like all colonist wiped out the indigenous natives and their existing societies, brought disease and enslavement. Did you know about 17% of the Puerto Rican population identifies as black? When the forced labor of native population didn't suffice the Spanish brought in African slaves.
By the mid-1820s, Spain had lost its colonies in Mexico, Central America, and most of South America, establishing a wave of new, independent nations.
Now that we are done with all the depressing talk.. let's hit the colorful streets of San Juan.
The skinniest door.
We had lunch at El Jibarito
We headed back to Isla Verde, where we were staying. After a jump in the pool and some jacuzzi time we showered and headed out for dinner at Metropol restaurant. This was probably our least favorite meal. Everything was very salty.
Next we head to the rainforest!
Wow, looks like you and your family had such a good time. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to go to Puerto Rico!

My niece in law is from Brazil and speaks Portuguese of course, since Portugal colonized that area. I used to spend lots of time in Astoria, NW corner of Oregon, taking cats to an affordable clinic there. Fort Stevens state park, where I nap in parking lots, has several batteries from old times, (from 1860's to WWII) where large canons were placed to defend the north coast and mouth of the Columbia River. The Puerto Rico defense positions look fearsome to foreign ships with ill intent. Can't wait to hear about the rainforest adventure.
ReplyDeleteSo much colour in the street scenes! And your boys are getting so tall now!
ReplyDeleteOh your photos are bringing back memories from our visit to PR. I too have issues eating in restaurants as I am vegan and gluten free.
ReplyDeleteLove this post! It looks like a great place to visit. Sadly, I'm never surprised at the ignorance of Americans when it comes to geography and history. 😒 I want to find a place that serves vegan Puerto Rican food. I've seen a lot of it on Food Network and I think I'd love it!
ReplyDeleteA nice trip you had. Good food, colorful buildings, and pretty views.

**this heating unit that was installed the water heats up right away. There's no water wasting. And it has continual heat for whoever uses it next. It doesn't run all the time, so he mentioned that my water bill would be less. I'm real picky about water wasting as well, but this one heats up quickly as soon as the faucet is turned on, just like the regular water heater. Living in the mountains, he thinks this one will be best.
If you hadn't said that you were in Puerto Rico I'd swear you were in our favourite area of North Tenerife, the architecture, colourful houses and street art are identical! I'd starve to death there with all that meat! x
ReplyDeleteI had a childhood friend who was from Puerto Rico (her mom was, anyway). Last I heard, her mom had moved back.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for sharing your Puerto Rican adventures, Hena! You guys sure know how to travel! xxx

ReplyDeleteThat sounds absolutely wonderful! I am quite lucky in that I like pretty much any and all seafood so visiting small Caribbean islands is delicious for me. But I have often thought of how much my boys would struggle with eating if they were to some with us. I love the colorful buildings!
ReplyDeleteGosh I would love to revisit Puerto Rico. We stopped there on our honeymoon in 1985 and visited the Bacardi Rum Distillery and El Morro. Such a pretty place!

Awesome post! I will have to show this one to Barb as she is going there in January!
ReplyDeleteI have been to Puerto Rico a few times back in the 90's and I would like to go back again soon. I went with a friend of mine originally from there which is my favorite way to travel. We had so much fun and it is so beautiful there. It reminds me a bit of South Florida. Like you, I do not eat pork but the beef and chicken dishes that I had there were very good. I'm not much of a plantain fan but they are ok. I'm glad you all had a lovely trip.
ReplyDeleteYour food pictures are making me hungry. LOL. Always love seeing your photos and reading about your adventures. Happy Wednesday!
ReplyDeleteGreat pictures from Porto Rico !
