Sandy

It was Sunday night and the wind had began to rattle our windows, the red leaves flew off our big tree that was just moments ago full. We tried to get dinner on the table early, before we 'god forbid' lost power. The lights flickered and it was dark and within moments it returned.. relief. We hurried to the table and it went dark again only to return. We were midway into our dinner went it went dark again.. this time power did not return. So we ate a bite or two, out appetites lost. We put D to sleep and watched the our now naked tree, the street abandoned and dark, the rain pummeling the ground. And then, while we watched, it happened. A big black monster flew out from behind our home and fell onto our wires.

It reminded M and I of a dementor (oh how I miss Harry Potter). It wasn't long before the police arrived and a fire truck. They inspected the area, located two car owners and had their cars removed from the area and then they tied yellow tape around our house. We woke up to find ourselves still powerless and back at the window to see what our dementor really was. My neighbors roof.

We spent three days without power, D just a good sport. And then Thursday evening I turn on the television and see the news, stunned by the devastation around us. Feeling a bit selfish for complaining about no power when there are some with no homes. I am so happy we have power back but my heart and prayers go out to those who are still without and those who have fared worse. May God give you the strength to get through this tragedy.

Gas has also become a problem, like nothing I have ever imagined. The long lines, people standing with gas cans, it seems right out of a book or movie. Yesterday I stood behind a few dozen cars in line. I could see the gas station, I did not know if they had gas or how long the lines were.. I saw a line and parked my car along the car and watched another dozen cars gathered behind me.

The trains haven't resumed service yet, so M commutes by changing three buses.. his once hour commute can now run up to two hours and grocery stores are a swarming with people. With no carts you just buy what you can carry.. I am now just waiting for normalcy to return, aching for routine to resume.

Hoping you all are well, take care and stay safe.

I think almost all my family member have power and thankfully the worst was a broken window here and there for them. Thinking of you guys right now.

  17. Going without electric can get pretty old after a few days I sympathize. And just knowing about all the suffering in the surrounding areas must just add to your discomfort.I'm so glad Sandy didn't affect you or your family any harder. I pray that your life returns back to normal as soon as possible Hena.
