Saying Goodbye to Copenhagen

Image
We spent our last day and a half in Copenhagen.. we started our fourth morning with breakfast in Cafe Europa. This was my favorite breakfast of our trip.   After our bellies were full we headed towards Church of Our Savior, a baroque church most famous for its helix spire with an external winding staircase that can be climbed to the top, offering extensive views over central Copenhagen. All I can say is wow! It had been a chilly morning, by the time we were half way up the spiral it had gotten windy and started to drizzle.. it was exhilarating, also a little scary.. had to really hold on to D, I was afraid we'd fly away. H had to be carried all the way up, the stairs were irregular so M was exhausted by the time we got to the top. But so worth it.  After the church we walked through Christiania, a self proclaimed autonomous neighborhood of less than 1000 residents. It is famous for it's hippie culture and cannabis. No photography.  We were g

Halloween Weekend

Image
I'm going to take a break from Denmark posts this week for a Halloween post. Will be back with one last Denmark post next week.. We had a pretty good Halloween this year. We were hosting a Halloween party so we were in an especially festive mood. We decorated the house.. the balloon ghosts were especially fun to make and M was busy cutting up garbage bags making spider webs.. next time he wants to make a spider too. This year H was a bit spooked and was afraid of going into any room with a white balloon. It was kinda funny.  I made mummified chicken tenders for the kids and mummified jalapeno's poppers for the adults.. It was a pot luck so everyone pitched it. I made some orange sherbet punch.. my first time ever making punch and surprise surprise it was a hit.. the kids got a kick out of the eye balls floating about. One of my friends daughter made these adorable witch hats.  after lunch the kids decorated foam pumpki

Light the Way Home - About 45 minutes outside of Lisbon is the idyllic small town of Sintra. A must see if you ever find yourself in Portugal. There, there is the Quinta da Regaleira, a world heritage site by UNESCO and an exuberantly Gothic garden, with hidden tunnels, inverted tower, winding paths, a chapel and a small palace. This photograph was taken inside a hidden tunnel. You can buy this print here . A Castle and Some Art

Image
It was our fourth day in Denmark and our last with a car and so we headed north. Our first stop was Frederiksborg Castle in Hillerod just 30 minutes away from Copenhagen. It was the royal residence for King Christian IV in the early 17th century. It was a small and beautiful castle which we all enjoyed walking through.. and then outside was a small lake, ponds, fountains and beautiful gardens that the boys really enjoyed running through.  Our next stop was Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk.  The above was a mixed media piece called Gleaming Lights of the Soul by Yayoi Kusama. There was a small line, a few people were allowed to enter the room at a time. We were given a minute in the room. It was a dark room filled with water the walls and ceilings were mirrors. We walked out onto a platform. The room was full of tiny lights. The colors changing.. it was simply sublime. This is one of the museum's few permanent installation.
