Friday Photography

I am going to be sharing another one from the archives. This above photograph was taken in Karachi. On of the women from the janitorial staff in my college was sitting on the bench taking a break and I found the warm brown of her skin so beautifully complemented by the orange of her shalwar (a baggy pant like garment worn by women in South Asia.. think hammer pants) The print is available for purchase here                                  Etsy             Instagram             Twitter             Redbubble             Zazzle             Society6

Valley of Fire State Park

Image
We spent a total of three nights in Las Vegas . On our second day there.. to break up the monotony of the strip we decided to do a little off strip exploring. Last time we visited Vegas, M and I visited the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation  which is just 30 mins away this time we ventured a little further and drove 75 mins to the Valley of Fire State Park, Nevada's oldest and largest state park. It is 46,000 acres of red Aztec sandstone, formed by shifting sand dunes 150 million years ago.  We had two main hikes on the agenda. The first was the Fire Wave and Seven Wonders loop (1.8 miles)  and the second was the White Domes loop (1.1 mile).  The was a $10 entry fee. We stopped at the Visitors Center for a quick bathroom break and encountered this handsome fella.  I would have guessed and said ram but google informs me that it is a bighorn sheep. We drove towards the hike and let me tell you.. just the drive through the park was worth it.. if you h...

2 Days in Las Vegas

Image
The next day we left Page  and made the 5ish hour drive to Las Vegas. This is our second time going to Vegas. Our first time with the kids. Here's a look at what we did the first time around. Was not a fan then and we were not a fan this time either. We had initially planned on going to Flagstaff for a few days of skiing but this was before D's eye and we didn't think it would be a good idea to let him ski. So we changed things around and added a two days in Vegas.  We stayed at the Venetian. The hotel and our suite was stunning. For our first lunch we stopped at Tacos El Gordo. It is supposed to have the best taco on the strip and I will agree with that.. 100%. But the ordering process is confusing, the lines are long and we almost got into an altercation with someone who tried to cut in front of us.  I think everyone was little Hangry! We strolled the north side of the strip and were bored pretty quickly and ended up just returning to the hotel. M and H headed to the p...

Antelope Canyons and Horseshoe Bend

Image
This winter break we headed to Arizona for days of stunning red rocks, more cacti than we could count and amazing food. Seriously, not a single bad meal. This was our second trip to Arizona. The first was a short weekend trip to the Grand Canyon .  We took an evening flight out and landed in Phoenix later that night.. picked up our rental car and headed straight to the hotel to sleep.      The next morning we were out bright and early and on our way to Page. The drive into Page was a stunning one. You can  see here .  We had a tour booked for the Antelope Canyons. The antelope canyon is a slot canyon on Navajo land. Antelope Canyon was formed by the erosion of Navajo Sandstone, due to flash flooding. Rainwater, especially during monsoon season, runs into the extensive basin above the slot canyon sections, picking up speed and sand as it rushes into the narrow passageways. Over time the passageways eroded away, deepening the corridors and smo...
