Istanbul: Day One

Image
We arrived a little after noon and since it was time to check in just yet we decided to take a stroll and eat a light lunch. We found Albura Kathisma. The complimentary balloon like bread with olives, a grilled cheese salad for me and a spinach crepe for M.  Then we continued our stroll headed towards the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia Unfortunately, with the blessing of travel also comes the chance of becoming jaded.. and I am sad to say that we are jaded. Standing inside two of what are to be some of the most beautiful mosques in the world.. we looked at each other and thought.. hmm nice. Did You Know:   The Blue Mosque was the inspiration for the building of Mohammad Ali's Mosque in Cairo. They were built by the same architect. Next stop.. the Basilica Cistern Followed by a dessert break.. how could we not? The beautiful and delicious, creamy white and green pistachio rice pudding.. We found this treat at the Hafiz Mustafa sweet shop on our way to the

It's Been A Week

Image
It's been a week.. though it seems like a lot more.. I had almost forgotten just how intense the heat here could be. My parents are at the tail end of renovations in there home.... so you can imagine the chaos.  We had a pretty decent.. 19 something hours flight.. though the fact that D threw up two hours before landing was no fun.. gross.  He made a friend  Meeting my mother's parrot. An interesting bond they are forming.. D is just scared enough of him as to not touch him or pull it's tail.. but brave enough to steal his toys and tease him... the parrot is cautious for now.. questioning his expendability.. but a few more weeks of a crazy toddler.. not sure how much more he'll be able to take it.   Teaching his grand father and great grand father the in's and out's of an iPhone..   Fruit Stand  Shopping for some clothes..  Bold prints and patterns.  I hate posing for pictures. The fashion here is as evolutionary as

The City of a Thousand Minarets

I am so glad you all enjoyed our layover in  Amsterdam  and now it's almost time to take you to Egypt, but before I do I must give you a little background. When I told you that we had a trip planned I mentioned that is was not going to be a trip of leisure but of prayer and spirituality. And it was exactly that, it was not about the pyramids or the museums but of a beauty, history and pain of a different kind. Let me explain. Most of you know that we are Muslims. Like most religions, Islam too is divided into many sects, the main two being Sunni and Shia. We belong to the latter. The Shia's are further divided into many sects, we belong to a a sub sect of the Fatimid's known as the Dawoodi Bohra's. You may have seen Muslim women wearing headscarves and burqah's etc. We, the women, traditionally wear what is called a rida (they can be a variety of colors with embroidery and applique, sequins, bead work and ribbon work, the sky is the limit) and the men a white kurta
