Thanksgiving in Cancun
The last couple of years we have been spending our Thanksgiving's on a warm tropical island. We don't have much family here and most of our friends are busy so seems pointless, the four of us just sitting at home.
The kids loved the indoor trampoline park, rooftop mini golf and other amenities to enjoy in the non pool hours. Plus they had a little movie theatre and fresh popcorn every evening. Plus ziplining, rock climbing and a bull!
The first time we ventured out was in 2021. We were still dealing with Covid and we had found the strictest most Covid safe island and had the most magical time in Antigua. In 2022 we went to Jamaica. This year we revisited Cancun. The last time we were in Cancun was in 2016 and H was still in diapers!
We had an early morning flight, I had imagined us by the pool by lunch. But things didn't go exactly as planned. We had to disembark the plane due to low tire pressure and reboard over an hour later. The rest of the journey was uneventful. But once we got to the Cancun airport it was madness. And I hate to say it but we got scammed!
We have been avidly traveling for almost 15 years now and have been to countless countries and it was Cancun that got us.. lol. Yes, I can laugh about it now. And it all was fine in the end.. actually worked out positively.. but we are still surprised we missed all the signs.
So we get down to the baggage claim area and a lady rushes up to us asking us if we need to book a car. We say no. We'll take a taxi. So she ushers us to the right side to a bunch of desks saying we can book our taxi here. Okay. The man asks ask where we are going and where we are from.. how many nights we are staying.. basic airport small talk. When we say four nights he says oh well you are in luck. Did you know that the government is running a promotion for all those staying in Cancun for three nights or more. We are slightly skeptical but thought we'd give him a listen. He goes on to say Moon Palace Resorts is launching a new hotel and they are inviting you to breakfast.. all expenses paid and also gifting you an excursion. We are on alert now listening so where the scam is.. because if it sounds too good to be true, you know the rest. He says all we have to do is pay a fully refundable $80 to hold our place. This was the moment we should have said no.. but for some reason we didn't. We paid. Got our very official government issued receipt, time and date scheduled, he gave us his phone number. It all seemed legit. We headed out. No taxi booked. Don't even get me started on the price gouging with the taxi's.. it may have been cheaper to book a car and drive ourselves to the hotel. But the whole breakfast and excursion things niggled in the back of our minds.
We checked in and had a late lunch. We stayed at the Sensira Resort and Spa.
It was a lovely spot away from the Cancun hotel zone and in the quieter Puerto Morelos.
The next morning was our scheduled breakfast. I had done some googling the day before and figured it was most likely going to be a timeshare presentation. We had a car waiting to take us. We had a magnificent breakfast and endured a timeshare presentation. We have done two of these before in our much earlier travels. We had scored Universal Florida tickets with the first.. this was pre kids and the second had gotten us a rental car. This hopefully will most definitely be our last. Thankfully the sales reps were a lot less pushy then we remembered. And we were out of there in about 2 hours. It could have been worse and we got a free pass to Aqua World and our $80 was refunded. So it wasn't all that bad.. just can't believe we actually fell for it.
Our hotel was lovely.. not too crowded, pool chairs always available.. unlimited fresh tacos being made at every meal..
The kids loved the indoor trampoline park, rooftop mini golf and other amenities to enjoy in the non pool hours. Plus they had a little movie theatre and fresh popcorn every evening. Plus ziplining, rock climbing and a bull!
On the day we had our Aqua World pass we were responsible for getting there. We headed out after lunch. It was 40 mins away.
First we rode the Speed Twister.. while I was expecting to get drenched, thankfully it was just a very fast boat that twisted and turned.
and then we went snorkeling and this whole excursion was technically free.
We got to drive our own little boat which was super cool.
I did not partake.. I have a fear of floating away and being left behind. The last time I snorkeled I kept poking my head up making sure I hadn't drifted away. It was not fun. But the water was so clear I could see so many fish from the comfort of my boat.
The rest of our days were spent basking in the sun, M played volleyball and I read. The kids are now old enough to wander on their own and give us some time to ourselves as well.
Looks fun!!!! I don't celebrate thanksgiving so I should start going somewhere during that time.

ReplyDeleteSounds like another amazing vacation!! I'm thinking of changing up our Thanksgiving a bit next year.
ReplyDeleteLooks like such a fab time! I was in Cancun many years ago -- 20 at least -- and it's a beautiful spot indeed!
ReplyDeleteHello! I love your family adventures so! Your boys have so much knowledge of our world and all the beautiful places. Love your family picture too! And, I would be with you, on the boat, watching!
ReplyDeleteyou make memories twice, once in real life then telling us all about it, thank you!! Happy Thanksgiving to you and your beautiful family.

Timeshare scouts are sneaky - I got caught once and that's 3 hours of my life I'll never get back! Glad it worked out for you in the end though.
ReplyDeleteYour boys are absolutely adorable wherever they roam. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun way to spend Thanksgiving. Sorry to hear you were scammed though, but surely it could have been much worse! xxx
ReplyDeleteThat sounds wonderful; even your scam didn't turn out to be anywhere near as bad as it could have... and at least you got your money back and had a fun day excursion from it.
ReplyDeleteWow! I continue living vicariously through your lovely family adventures. Thank you for sharing once again.
ReplyDeleteI so enjoyed all of your photos, the water looks especially tempting this time of year. What a fabulous getaway for the whole family. The thought of unlimited fresh tacos was also particularly tantalizing!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like a lovely trip. Sorry you got scammed.
ReplyDeleteGood things the scam wasn't all that bad and it looks like you guys managed to have a marvelous time despite it so everything worked out. We should look at going away for Thanksgiving since it's not something we celebrate at all.
ReplyDeleteYou are giving your children such lovely experiences by your frequent travels with them. Sorry you got scammed though.
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of getting away this way. I don't think you were scammed per se. At least it wasn't a total loss.

That sounded like the perfect Thanksgiving getaway (minus the timeshare situation!). When we've flown into Cancun we've always booked a car service through the hotel and get warnings to avoid all those people inside trying to get you to buy or do something. It's a crazy airport when you land! I miss Mexico...your trip made me want to go back!!
ReplyDeleteThe mini-golf and trampoline place look fun! I can't believe there are no food pix for us to drool over. ;)
ReplyDeleteIt's been so long since I've been to Cancun and Cozumel, you're making me think it's time to make another trip there.
ReplyDeleteI understand your frustration. I avoid all of those presentations when we are traveling. It looks like a great trip overall.
ReplyDeleteThe resort looks like so much fun!
ReplyDeleteAt least the scam wasn't really a scam. You wasted some time, but you got your money back :)
Looks like that you all had a great time!
ReplyDeleteCancun looks like a bucket-list destination.
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos, Hena.
What a wonderful Thanksgiving! -Christine cmlk79.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteLove to see those smiling faces, they do look so wonderful. Gosh, getting scammed, well least it was a rather pleasant ending.
ReplyDeleteIt looks wonderful - and the smiles say it was.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you had a lot of fun. Wonderful place.
ReplyDeleteI've never been anywhere in Mexico except right across the border. I'd love to visit Cancun. What a lovely trip (well, except for the scam!)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous Thanksgiving trip! I love the waters of the Caribbean. Just so pretty!

Looks like a wonderful holiday! I'm sorry to hear you got scammed, but glad it turned out okay in the end.
ReplyDeleteWhat a fun Thanksgiving in Cancun. The water is so green/blue. The snorkeling and ziplining sound like a fun adventure. My kids did that in Costa Rica, so much fun for them. I really liked the pool table photo and brought back memories. I had a pool table growing up, and I won a game or two in my time. ; ) Lovely photos and smiles all around. : )

Wonderful trip, the water looks so soothing and clear. Happy Holiday Season!
ReplyDeleteYou sure know all the ins and outs of travel. It is easy to fall for the timeshare presentations, just don't buy one (you already know that!) I would love to travel for Thanksgiving and Christmas. I feel like Morley's ghost right now with the weight of expectations with those holdays. It would be great to just reinvent the holiday.
ReplyDeleteI am glad you had a great time

What a great Thanksgiving getaway! It´s probably pretty cold in NJ so I imagine how nice Cancun must have felt. Great pictures! Lots to do at the resort- how nice for the kids and your excursion looks really fun!
ReplyDeleteOh no sorry you fell for a scam but at least you got refund and besides this hiccup your trip looked like a lot of fun and love the photos!

Looks like a lovely vacation despite the time share scam. Beautiful family and love your pictures!
ReplyDeleteLooks and sounds perfectly idyllic! Especially the unlimited tacos, hahaa! xoxo
ReplyDeleteIt sounds wonderful
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like even with some of the troubles you still had a great time, with interesting things to do, and I bet it was nice to be somewhere warm. We live far from family too so we always have a quiet time just the two of us :)
ReplyDeleteI enjoy your travel adventures as you globe trot around the world! It sounds like a great way to spend Thanksgiving! Great photos too!
ReplyDeleteAmazing, the clear blue Water looks fantastic. It seems to be a wonderful time
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about the scamming, but it looked like you guys still had a good time so yay for that:)

ReplyDeleteWhat a great way to spend Thanksgiving. Looks like your boys had a blast!!
ReplyDeleteI don't really understand where the scam is if you got your $ back and a free day at Aqua World, but it looks like you had a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteSounds wonderful

It sounds like a mixed blessing with the scamming on the downside but I'm also seeing lots of smiles and that part looks fun.
ReplyDeleteYou are making memories your kids will never forget. And one day, you will look back at the presentation, laugh and wonder how you ever fell for that. We have never sat through a presentation, but we have plenty of friends who have to get whatever free perk they were offering.
ReplyDeleteWhat a cool destination, I hope the whole family enjoyed lots!
ReplyDeletehave a great week,

OMG you seem to have had an incredible time again!
ReplyDeleteLooks great.

Happy Thanksgiving, Hema! good for you for escaping the madness and getting away somewhere tropical. Sorry about the scam, but at least you didn't lose your money! That aqua park looks so fun - and what an amazing hotel! I'd be playing pool and mini golf all day!

Can't think of a better way to celebrate Thanksgiving!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you had a lovely time! x
ReplyDeleteThat's such a great idea! I've gone away right before Thanksgiving, and that was nice too--especially because we also went some place sunny and warm! The scam part UGH that's so frustrating. I'm glad it was worked out as "well" (??) as it did because I was getting nervous as I was reading!!
