Shenandoah Getaway

Things have been busy.. summer seems to be getting away from us and I feel we just didn't have enough time. This summer we got bogged down by a lot of things that just had to be done. But we did manage a little getaway.. it had it's fare share of bumps but hey we are living in a crazy world right now and we have got to make do with what we got. We got a VBRO in Luray, Virginia, but before we got there we made a little stop to Assateague Island. We had been there before, many moons ago when D was a little little guy and M had always wanted to go back to explore it better. For those of you don't know Assateague Island is a barrier island off the coast of Maryland and Virginia inhabited by wil d Chincoteague ponies. Last time we took a boat ride around the island this time we rode our bikes through it and it was amazing! We had come mentally prepared to so few to no horses but lady luck was on our side and we saw a pack of horses even before we got on our bikes.  The next coup

Break From The Pack - A lone wild pony breaks away from his herd on the Assateague Island, to explore and graze in solitude. Assateague Island is a 37-mile long barrier island located off the eastern coast of Delmarva. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland while the southern third is in Virginia. These ponies.. more commonly known as the Chincoteague Ponies, whom legend states are descendants of Spanish horses shipwrecked on their way to Peru in the 16th century.   Every year on the last Wednesday of July is held a pony run.. also known as Pony Penning.. where the ponies swim across the channel. It takes 5-10 minutes.. Larger foals are auctioned the next day and the majority of the herd, including any young foals, are returned to Assateague on Friday. Some ponies are purchased under "buy back" conditions, where the bidder donates the money to the fire department but allows the pony to be released back onto Assateague Island.  This print is available f

Ponies and Ferries

We left Virginia Beach early, we had a lot to do that day.. but even when in a hurry you still need breakfast. So we grabbed egg and cheese sandwiches on the go from Java Surf.. it looked like a fun hangout place.. books, instruments and board games lined the shelves and the menu was written on surf boards..  We grabbed our breakfast and hit the road. Destination: Chincoteague Island and how to get there? The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It reminded me of the roads taken to get to Key West but so much better. It was early Friday morning so there was hardly anyone on it.. it was 23 miles of bridge and tunnel surrounded by the great blue sea. Pictures just do not do it justice.  Waiting for us on Chincoteague Island was a boat. Daisy's Cruises. I can not express just how perfect this trip was. The tour was of seven people including the captain and tour guide Tom. He does not take out large groups, he likes the two hour tours to be intimate and comfortable.
