Thrifting and a Baby Bird

Hello June.

I was influenced by Jeanette over at Net on the Net and went to my first estate sale. I was driving home, saw the sign and made a spontaneous stop.

I wasn't really looking for anything.. and left empty handed.

We also visited an annual sale hosted by a local historical society. We bought a little this and that. I haven't been very good about documenting our purchases.

We have a church just a couple of minutes away that holds thrift sales every Saturday expect during the winter. Most my donations go to them and it is also our most visited one.

I have bought more that a few things there but our best find yet? This $5 toaster. Mine was acting up and I had already ordered one (which I swiftly returned).

The husband bought this and put it up on the window above the kitchen sink. It's been a week and no birds?! Not a single one has visited. There are plenty in our backyard but they don't seem to be fans of the feeder.

But in one of shrubs near our front door there is a nest. Last week I stuck my phone is to check on it and a baby.

this week I snuck my phone in there again and..

We have spotted some other nests as well but they are out of my reach.

  1. hm, we used to go garage sale shopping back in the day but haven't in years. I've never been to an estate sale, not sure I would want to go to one. The baby bird is adorable!!

  2. Oh my! Those nest photos are just fantastic! I do like a good estate sale or yard/tag sale. Ones for charity make me feel especially good when I find something to buy. That bird. I am in awe!

  3. I love estate sales and garage sales. I have some very cool and practical things I found at them. Maybe the birds can see you through the window - also, certain birds prefer certain types of seeds. Plus - spring means lots of insects so birds can be picky!

  4. Awe, such a nice photo of the baby bird. So cute. I used to go to Estate sales when we lived in Florida but I'm more in the mindset now of not buying much at all.

  6. I love how you are documenting the growth of the baby bird. :-) We did this a few years ago. We took photos each day to watch how they grew. We were able to capture the day they took their first fly.

  7. Sometimes the estate sales have interesting things and sometimes they don't. Better not to get things just to get things.

  9. One of my friends loves estate sales and is basically my personal book shopper henever she goes, because I am trying to collect the original Nancy Drew books for Eleanor. She really liked the tv show and I told her she needs the original and correct source material, lol. She has two sets of the first twenty books, but they're the newer publications, like from when we were kids, with the bright yellow hardcovers. She also loved the young Nancy Drew series when she was younger. It's amazing what you can find sometimes.

  11. Awww, that baby bird is gorgeous! Don't worry about the feeder, it can take birds weeks to use them, just whe we think they're not going to use any new additions to the garden they turn up.
We don't have estate sales here so it was fascinaiting to see what they're like! xxx

  16. The baby bird photos are fascinating. I've gotten some good items at what we call "yard or garage sales". Sometimes people have items that are new or almost new that they just don't use. I got a $200 Breville juicer for $10- She used it twice and just didn't use in again in 5 years. Works perfectly.

  19. I've loved estate sales and garage sales since my teens. My apartment (and house before it) is furnished with the unique things you can't buy in stores anymore. Partly it's the thrill of the hunt and partly is because houses have more character when they have charming things. Like your toaster. I love it!

  20. The only bird nest I know of every year is up high in one of my trees, it's a robin next. My family used to go to estate sales and auctions all the time. These days I try not to unless I need something for my library/school, as I have to get rid of the things I've collected myself over the years, lol. Thanks for sharing, those chairs in the one sale looked really cute!

  21. Baby birds are exciting. We have a nest, but it's too high to see into. I'm not sure if the birds are still there or not.

  22. Love the baby birds! We have a bluebird house and they have two or three sets of babies every summer. So fun to watch them grow and eventually fly. My in-laws loved estate sales and they had an eye for things. I didn't get that gene : )

I hope you get a bird soon! My hummingbird feeder was so popular last summer and this summer I had one bird visiting it and now it has stopped! I'm so bummed!

  30. i am not a thrift store person. nothing against it, i just never got into the habit of visiting thrift stores or yard sales!! i donate everything i feel worthy to a church nearby. i have 2 birds nest on either end of my awning. the birds have chewed 4 huge holes in the awning. we replaced it 2 years ago because of the same problem, it was $ 2,000.00. they tell me it is a very common problem!!
