lately

Life took a bit of a turn while I was writing this post. I had, in my head a list of things I had wanted to share and then I woke up to a flooded basement. Yup, so that happened. Plus M was in a plane heading to Asia while all this went down. All fun stuff.

So all of last week we were having issue with our water pressure. Thursday morning M leaves and I have the guy from the water company come out to check our water pressure etc. On the safe side (because M is a planner) we also had a plumber dropping by in the evening. Just to cover our bases. The water company guy said there is most likely a leak in the service line and not their problem. Thankfully the plumber was set to come. He checked it out.. spotted some wet spots on our walls and said it was definitely a larger issue. Unfortunately, he was booked sold for the next two weeks. So 8pm I sit and sent out a bunch of texts to every plumber on M's phone. Just to get the ball rolling and would reach out to them again via phone on Friday morning. Well, Friday morning comes around and I go down to the basement to get something an step into squishy wet carpet. Take a moment to have a massive freak out.. then make some calls to the plumbers. General consensus was that our sump pump is broken.

In other news.. H made some art for his school talent show. He loves making origami so after some brainstorming we were able to create an origami based diorama.

Hs has always been interested in cooking but his knife skills have gotten really good.

D also had something to celebrate. Our highschool along with other neighboring high school are all home to specialized magnet programs. Our high school specializes in the business program, another highschool has a med sci program and so on. So D had the choice of going to regular high school or applying to one of these programs. We attended the open houses in fall (I felt like we were getting ready for college) He had to write an essay and sit of an exam. And well, long story short. He got into the program he wanted to get into.

The program is called Global Studies. His focus will be world history, world languages, art history and diplomacy and international relations. He is sad to be leaving his current friends behind but very excited that he got in. We are excited for him.

I have been looking for new shows to watch. I watched The Expats and was extremely disappointed. I enjoyed Mr. and Mrs. Smith and am currently watching Alien Resident which is light hearted and fun. I binged all 5 seasons of Fargo but only got through one and a half of True Detective. Send me your recs.

We watched Forrest Gump with the kids.. this movie is so quotable..

I have been searching for sunny spots though the house for my house plants. I move them to the front of the house in the morning.. let them soak in some sun.

For those of you who have been reading my blog for sometime might remember that I painted and stenciled my tiled foyer. Well, every now and then it requires a few touch ups so I have been doing just that. If you don't remember then you can check out the post and process here. It not too bad.. I have to do touch ups every few years and then M reseals the floor.

  1. That sucks about the leak! We had a leak with the brand new dish washer and we had to wait weeks for GE to come.

  3. Good luck with the water issue. Our sump pump is a vital part of island life and it would be a major problem if it were to malfunction.

Congratulations to your son for getting into the program of his choice!

  5. Ugh I'm sorry to hear about the house issues. Doesn't it always seem like something around the house is always broken? Or maybe that's just ours lol

  6. Stressful when something breaks down in the house. Nice your son will study where he wanted. Great idea, high schools with specialty programs for futures careers.

  8. What a nightmare! I hope it's under control now. Congrats to D on getting in the school and I love H's origami diorama. Did you know that Forrest Gump was a book before it was a movie? It's different in many ways, but equally good. I'm glad I saw the movie first.

  9. That always happened to me too when my hubby would go out of town there was sure to have something happen, not always extreme but something. Hope you can get it taken care of soon, I know it starts to smell very musty soon. Congrats to H that is so cool!! Hope he enjoys it.
We watched some shows lately but do you think any of them come to mind, I am just losing it I guess.

  10. Sorry to hear about the leak. We watched Resident Alien when it first came out but have not seen the latest season. We just started watching Friday Night Lights. I know it has been out for quite a while but we had never seen it and are finding it very enjoyable.

I like the origami diorama - very imaginative.

  18. I'm so sorry about the plumbing issue. That's the worst. And you were trying to get ahead of it, too.

As for TV recommendations, what streaming services are you using? For broadcast TV, I like the new show, Tracker. And on Hallmark, I recommend The Way Home, although it just started its season 2, and you really need to have seen season 1 for it to make sense.

  19. Oh no I am so sorry to read about the flooded basement; that is no fun at all! Congrats to D on getting into the program of his choice; that's so exciting.

  21. Oh no! I know the stress of having water issues as we had an issue after torrential rains overcame our blocked city drain that runs to our house. Good luck with that - how stressful that your husband isn’t home to help.

  22. bummer about that wet basement and m being on a plane...they are good at helping out with these things!! your wet carpet resembles our carpet when chuck spilled the paint, the pattern is so similar!! i wish my boys would have been interested in cooking, it is a wonderful skill for them to have!!

  23. I am so sorry about your water leak. I know firsthand the stress and work associated with that. we have had it happen three times and it sucks! You sound like you are on top of everything, so that is good. Make sure you get some dehumidifiers running, k? Oh that reminds me! We had it happen in the kitchen once too. That time, I literally went upstairs and stayed in my room until Steve took care of it. LOL. Congratulations to your son! What a well deserved honor!

  24. I hope the issue with the broken pump will get sorted without too much hassle. At least good things are going on with both your kids.

  25. Well, that basement disaster looks like no fun. Wet carpet is not a great situation. Hope the clean up went ok. I am so impressed with your children. So much talent there!

  33. Oh no...I'm so sorry to hear about your leak! That really sucks, and I hope it's resolved soon for you!

Way to go for both of your kids! That origami (under the sea, right?) is stellar, and how exciting for your other son to get into the program he wanted - I wish there had been more things like that when I was younger!

Your painting is great - what a fun idea (but a pain for the touch-ups)!

Oh wow oh no!! That is not fun to deal with at all. The art project came out lovely. Likes to cook? How cool is that! I swear sometimes or more often then not I can never find something to watch and end up just watching YT.

  35. So good your son D got into what he wanted to do, hopefully he will love it.
Clever your other son cooking, well done to him.
The leak, oh gosh not much fun trying to get a plumber to come right away.
When my late dad was with us (he was legally blind) he phoned me one eveing and said he was walking in water...lol wasn't funny at them time, so I made the 1 hour journey to his house arrived about 1am and managed to get a plumber, all was fixed.

  36. Plumbing issues are the worst. Lately I'm having to replace everything plumbing-related in the house. I enjoy the origami and how your son's project turned out. Good also for your son accepting the decision to take his life in a different direction. Life is good isn't it?

    ReplyDelete
  37. First of all, congratulations to D. That sounds like a fascinating program and with all his travel and exposure to the world in his youth, I think he's ready to tackle that head on. Well done! And H's knife skills -- that's great. I couldn't help but notice that he was holding the knife correctly for chopping -- lots of kids don't do that (maybe they're hands feel to small.) That's impressive! Finally, I SO feel you water pain and hope everything is resolved soon. I've had water multiple times in the basement (hence, the recent mold remediation) but mine is a cement floor storage basement. With the carpet and all -- what a mess. I'm so sorry.

  38. That's exciting about the high school choice!Great job!! The origami diorama is awesome. I'm so sorry about your flooded basement...been there a few times! It's never fun..especially dealing with it on your own. I keep seeing that Alien show pop up, maybe I'll check it out. We watched Fargo, season 5 and loved it.Are you looking for comedies, dramas, mysteries??

Eek! Our basement flooding would be a huge mess, because it is finished! Never fun to have water problems AND when the hubs is traveling. I feel whenever something happens, it is when my husband is on a work trip! :(

  45. I'm sorry to hear about your plumbing issue. That is awful, and I dealt with a plumbing issue recently myself. I hope things get fixed at your home. I really like the origami project, so creative. And great news about your son getting into the Global Studies program. Sounds interesting, and history is such an awesome subject. That is wonderful that your son wants to learn to cook. My son wanted to be a chef, and still enjoys to cook in his 30's. Forest Gump is a classic, love that show. The only movie I can recommend that you may like is Under The Tuscan Sun. My favorite movie, and since you like traveling, thought I'd mention it. Your this and that post was right up my alley. ; )

  55. It always seems like it's not the water company's problem, or the electric or cable, etc. It always ends up being the customer's expensive problem. I hope you were able to get the sump pump fixed! I love that origami diorama! My niece loves creating art, she even used to have an "art show" every 4th of July at our family get together. I think she might be outgrowing it sadly. I love the magnet schools they have! Such great choices and realistic for students in their futures. Hope you have a good week!

  56. Well first my dear, the paint on your tiled floor is brilliant. I'm a sucker for black and white! Love it. Second, I don't do house plants (well, I have one and it's an un-killable one, or so says the friend who gave me the starter, hahaa and so far so good), but I LOVE how you move your plants to the sunny spots. My mother could grow anything and she cooed to and misted her plants like they were babies. I didn't inherit that trait. But I LOVE your little toucan planter!!! Congratulations to D for getting into the special school. I hope he will flourish there in every way. And H! That knife! I love to see a kid developing skills in the kitchen. But his origami! Fabulous! UGH UGH UGH a flooded basement ... many many years ago (I think baby Audrey was in my arms when it happened, although it may have been Erica), our sump pump broke and the basement flooded. We had a CURRENT running down there, hahahaha! I lost some wedding memetos that were stored in the crawl space, and I still have not got over that. I hope that situation is all resolved now! xoxo
