Spending a Day in Zurich
We had breakfast at the hotel before leaving Wengen. It was a two and half hour journey to Zurich. We arrived in Zurich famished and instead of waiting to get to the hotel and then searching for food we stopped to grab a meal at the train station. We shared rice and noodle bowl from Rice Up
We had a very nice breakfast at the hotel and then headed out. We did a lot of strolling. We walked along Bahnhofstrasse and crossed over the bridge to the old town and Niederdorf area.
This was such a cool shop.. it smelled like autumn and their window display captivated the boys attention. I wish I had taken a picture so I will have to borrow the below picture from The Passionate Eater
Afterwards they shared a hot chocolate from Cafe Conditorei 1842.. they were not a fan. But the shop was beautiful and they seemed to have many pretty pastries etc.
We walked until we reached Lake Zurich and then spent a good half and hour just watching the swans and ducks at play.
We got back to the hotel just in time..
We had dinner at Adler Swiss Chuchi were we tried their famous raclette and french onion soup. Raclette is when you heat cheese and scrape the melted part and pour it onto your food. And their french onion soup came with a layer of puff pastry you had to break into to get to the soup.. yum! I have posted a video of both here and here.
Then we checked into our hotel which was conveniently located across the street from the train station and next to Bahnhofstrasse (the 5th ave or Champ Eleysees of Zurich). Once we were refreshed we headed out to explore a bit. We meandered until we reach Lake Zurich.
But first we stumbled upon this cute bakery called Garde Manger. We sat along the River Limmat and sipped our coffees and enjoyed our fresh and delicious treats.
We wandered some more until we reach the tip of Lake Zurich. From there we hopped onto a bus that took us to the Lindt Chocolate Factory. I shared the post last week.. you can check it out here if you missed it.
After the tour we were pretty tired so we came back to Zurich proper via bus and ate some delicious burgers at The Butcher.
The next morning M flew to Luxembourg for his conference leaving the three of us to fend for ourselves.
The window displays were lined with spices and dried fruit from countries all across the globe and the boys insisted on reading everything!
The forecast predicted rain and the boys were itching for a break so we slowly started to head back towards the hotel. On the way there we spotted Galerie Adrienne Desbiolles and the work inside seemed interesting so in we went.
They were currently showing the works of a Mr. Brainwash, an LA based French street artist and his work was such fun to explore. He is a pop artist and incorporates a variety of famous images into his work (must be a copyright nightmare) You can google some of his work.
The kids were happy because just like any other kids they too constantly complain about how much we are 'forcing' them to walk but then also complain when they see how many step they walked that day and it isn't greater than the day before. They also cherish their screen time and were happy to spend some time in the wrap catching up.
We headed out again once the rain stopped and met up with M when he returned.
The next morning we checked out and headed to Zermatt.
We did return to Zurich at the end of our trip in order to catch our flight back home and have breakfast with M's friend who lives in Zurich with his wife and two daughters and with whom M had not met in over 18 years!
Wonderful to see your smiling faces, the shop fronts, the street along with the delicious looking food. Keep safe and enjoy.

ReplyDeleteThis all sounds completely wonderful. But I think you owe your readers a warning: Do NOT read if you are even a little bit hungry or feeling the slightest bit constrained in your daily routine. Could lead to impulsive bingeing, or reckless purchases of airline tickets to faraway places.
