Canandaigua Lake, New York
Just before the start of school we decided to take a break and get away. We had been thinking about doing something of the sort all summer but were unsure, when we finally decided to go ahead with it everything within a 3 hour radius was booked. We were only willing to go to safe states so Pennsylvania and New York seemed like our best bests. I expanded my search to the Finger Lakes district in Upstate New York and couldn't believe our lucky stars when I found a cute little place on VRBO in Canandaigua Lake with a pool! Yippee!!
We spent a lot of time in the pool.. well they did.. I spent a lot of time reading by the pool. It was a little cold but the kids didn't care.. they were so happy.. so we were so happy.
There was only one family per row.. very socially distant. And the glass artist had to use a air pump instead of blowing glass with his mouth.
It was approx 5 hours away.. so we thought to break up the trip with a horse back ride once we crossed into New York. We had never done one before and H is finally of a age where some companies allow him to ride a trail. Unfortunately it rained the whole afternoon.. so that was cancelled.. :(
Other than that little hiccup everything else was thankfully smooth sailing..
The House
We spent a lot of time in the pool.. well they did.. I spent a lot of time reading by the pool. It was a little cold but the kids didn't care.. they were so happy.. so we were so happy.
We played board games, watched movies, drank hot coco and popcorn and cuddled
Our only teeny tiny complaint would we that there were no restaurants that delivered. So we went to the nearby towns of Naples 15 minutes south and Canandaigua 15 minutes north of us to eat at the many restaurants. We even ended up dinning indoors a couple of times.. which we were initially very hesitant about but the tables were set far far apart, disinfected and it was all fine.
While in the town of Canandaigua we stumbled upon a used book store, Papaperback Place..
and we came home with 7 more books :)
We spent some of our morning at Kershaw Park on the northern most tip of the lake and then rented kayaks for an hour. This was D's first time being on his own kayak. H was with M on his kayak and I had my own. It was a beautiful day.
We were there for about 3 days.. on the way back we stopped in Corning to have lunch. We were in Corning last year and had heard a lot about the Corning Museum of Glass. Didn't had time to visit it then. Now we did :D
We spent way more time there then we had planned.. there were live demos.. very interesting.
Lovely and relaxing place!

hmmm, I really like this getaway and maybe I need to do that, especially since we drive through corning on our way to visit Canadian relatives (border closed so that's not happening any time soon).
ReplyDeleteIn another life you should be a travel agent, you come up with fun things to do and great places to see!
This sounds like the perfect little getaway. I miss the Finger Lakes area, my daughter went to Cornell and we'd visit all the time!
ReplyDeleteOh dear,I need to rewrite my comment. I keep forgetting to click the little box at the bottom! This looked like a perfect spot for your family and a great find. Love the pool and all the very happy smiles on everyone. Upstate NY is so lovely. I've always wanted to visit the Corning museum when we pass through and seeing your photos makes me want to visit all the more!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness what a GREAT trip. It looked relaxing and fun at the same time. The 'boys' all look happy. Seemed like you had a wonderful time. ☺

ReplyDeleteThat sucks that the restaurants wouldn't deliver and that your horse back riding experience was cancelled too. I love the house that you guys stayed in. Beautiful and with a pool. My girls would be in that the whole time.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! So awesome to see these pics:) That's great that you found this house and able to get away. And that's great to hear that social distancing was practiced where you went:)
ReplyDeleteWhat a fabulous get away Hena!!! We have a pool at our rec center and I always think it's cold when it's only 80-something degrees!! Its' funny how the kids don't care!
ReplyDeleteBummer you missed the horseback riding but everything else was so fun!!

That place looks fantastic for a little vacation! We live in rural upstate NY, north of Weedsport. The Finger Lakes are so beautiful, and I absolutely love the Corning Museum of Glass, although it's been years since I've been there. Since we couldn't go to Norway this summer, we went to the Adirondacks for a week, thank goodness for Airbnb!

ReplyDeletethe house is adorable and what a beautiful pool!! bummer about restaurant delivery but i hope at least the restaurant food was good!! and soooo nice to find that book store, for a family who loves to read!!!
Oh, that sounds wonderful. What a nice little getaway. The house on the lake looks so charming and clean too. I bet the boys had a blast kayaking. Books stores are always fun for the kids. They can browse in there for so long just looking around and using their imagination. A cute photo of all of you cuddling with popcorn and hot cocoa. And that unicorn photo is delightful. So glad you got a chance to get away and relax for awhile.

How lucky you were to find that gem of a house. And with a pool no less. I can see the boys made full use of it! How lovely to find that used book shop. I could have spent hours in there. Renting those kayaks sounds great too, as does that interesting glass museum! xxx
ReplyDeleteWhat a nice little late summer getaway!
