Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain
Necessary Lies by Diane Chamberlain
When Jane Forrester takes a position as Grace County’s newest social worker, she doesn’t realize just how much her help is needed. She quickly becomes emotionally invested in her clients' lives, causing tension with her boss and her new husband. But as Jane is drawn in by the Hart women, she begins to discover the secrets of the small farm—secrets much darker than she would have guessed. Soon, she must decide whether to take drastic action to help them, or risk losing the battle against everything she believes is wrong.
Thoughts- This was an extremely interesting and emotional read.. it would make a great book club book, its worthy of discussion. It talks about forced sterilization of women from poor families and especially those of color. I had no idea sterilization was once legal in America.. I obviously went down the wikipedia worm hole and read up all about it. Now while an appalling and controversial concept I must admit I went back and forth on my opinion of it all. Logically speaking it makes sense to curtail the population of children born into poverty or children that have a greater chance of being born with a disability or disease. Then there is the voice in me that screams what about freedom of choice.. shouldn't we all be able to make an educated decision, but what happens when you are not capable of making an educated choice? There were so many thoughts.. which made this book a compelling read.
If you have read it I'd love to hear your thoughts on it.. and if you haven't check it out..
This sounds like an interesting read!

Sounds very interesting - how did you decide to put it up and read it - with all the books out there?
ReplyDeleteI wasn't convinced by the synopsis, but your review has me thinking I need to look into this one more closely. I've tagged it in my library app.
ReplyDeleteSounds like a compelling read.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked this! It does sound like a good read and I'll remember it.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting topic; didn't know that had existed in the US before. Wow.
ReplyDeleteThis really does sound like a compelling read. I can see why it would be so ideal for a bookclub too. I imagine there are so many points worth discussing.

Forced steralization?! Wow. I didn't see that coming. I bet this would be a good book for a book club.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds fascinating. And thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteI do worry about compulsory decisions made on other people's behalf though. And find it hard to support them, particularly if the decision cannot be reversed.
Interestingly a politician in the UK has raised the desirability of that same issue recently.
That sound like an interesting read and totally my cup of tea. I'll be putting this book on my to look out for list! xxx
ReplyDeleteThe plot and the the whole issue of choice sounds very powerful and interesting.
ReplyDeleteI didn't know that about sterilization either! I think I knew it was legal in psychiatric hospitals way back when, but not in mainstream! This sounds like an interesting book!
ReplyDeleteI'll have to suggest this to my book club. I had never heard of this one.
ReplyDeleteXOXO

The premise of the book does sound interesting....never knew sterilization was legal in the US too! I wonder if the same happened in Canada....hmmmmm

I can't see how compulsory sterilisation could ever be a good idea because I have no doubt that the people making the decisions would be very biased towards their own needs, rather than working for the good of the people affected. This issue was raised in passing in Terry Tyler's book, Hope, which I read recently too.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like an interesting read but not one I think I'd enjoy - forced sterilisation is awful no matter how you look at it!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the great book review!
ReplyDeleteI haven't read this book yet but I've read several of Chamberlain's other novels and thought they were great. This one is on my TBR list so I hope to get to it sometime soon.
