Skyline Drive, Virginia
After Washington we headed on to Virginia and the natural beauty of the Shenandoah National Park. Camping was not on the itinerary nor were we equipped to hike with D. Instead we opted to cruise along the 105 miles of the Skyline Drive. We entered through the north most entrance at Front Royal. There was a $15 fee which is valid for seven days.
We ended the day in Richmond.. we were tired of all the food on the road so we both opted for a salad at Craker Barrel. Where the service was great. It was our first time eating there.. later learnt it was a chain and not a one of.. who knew? We liked it enough to come back for breakfast the next morning. (It was across the street from our hotel)
Next stop a Petting Zoo in Richmond and then Virginia Beach!
There are about 75 overlooks; reaching the heights of almost 4000ft but after the first 10 overlooks everything started to look the same.. and after the first few times of taking D out of the car and putting him back in he was annoyed and didn't want to get back in. The weather was perfect, everything so peaceful.
A little after the 30 mile marker we left the Skyline Drive using the Thornton Gap Entrance and headed into the town of Luray. Were we ate at the West Market Deli. Very good sandwiches.. our food karma had officially taken the turn for the better.
Next stop Luray Caverns. This was our second time visiting caves. Our first was in Upstate NY when we had visited the Howe Caverns. The caverns in Luray were two, three times larger than those in Howe and the formations much more wow worthy.
Do you see a dogs butt?
But this will be out last venture into caves and caverns for a while.. at least until D isn't older, old enough to take an actual interest and hopefully even remember the experience. Though he did discover the joy of a puddle.
Next stop a Petting Zoo in Richmond and then Virginia Beach!
So gorgeous out there! Love that area. :)
ReplyDeleteOoh, the food looks so incredible; and the sights are beautiful! I seriously need to visit Virginia one day! :)
ReplyDeleteGorgeous pics! Looks like you had a great trip!
ReplyDeleteI love the caverns!! I can't wait to see where you go in Richmond to eat or VA Beach!! Richmond has great places! Strawberry Street has the best pot pie!!
ReplyDeleteIt would have helped if I had known about Strawberry Street before. :( Someone told us about Cary Street which we drove by but didn't look like it was worth the stop.
DeleteSuch gorgeous photos - the caverns look awesome!

i'm dying to take the Skyline drive, everyone says it's worth it. D reminds me of my daughter, very set in his ways. Those sandwiches look heavenly! Can't wait to see the Virginia beach photos (i've never been)
ReplyDeleteYes, he is a determined one. M and I are both a bit like that.. so he has an extra dose of it.
DeleteMmm that food looks amazing!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE Virginia and West Virginia! Every year my husband and I do an east coast trip by chaperoning 8th graders on their annual Washington D.C. trip! Love that picture from Shenandoah Park....I definitely need to visit ;)

ReplyDeleteOh I DO see a dog's butt! Haha, that's funny! D is so cute. Hope your adventures are amazing! :) I'm going to Montreal and NY for the first time at the end of this week and I cannot wait!!
ReplyDeleteHow exciting.. have fun..
DeleteMy parents have been down to those mountains a few times and say they are beautiful. They do look amazing in your photos. I have to say my favorite thing would be the caves. There's something about going underground to a place that not many people see that seems exciting.
ReplyDeletethe caves are so cool.. and pictures just don't do them justice.
DeleteThat sandwich looks so yummy!! And thank you for the comment! :D And thanks for stopping by again and commenting! :D
ReplyDeletewhat a fun time. love the photos!!! xx

Love Cracker Barrel! Except that the kids want to buy things from their gift shop all the time so we tend to avoid the place.
ReplyDeleteIt was cute to see D in the caverns. We took Johnny to Indian Echo Caverns when he was that age and we had to carry him all the way because the tour guide was an evil bitch and he wasn't allowed to touch anything. Big waste of money!
Thanks for the road trip!

ugh that sucks.. D was running around like he owned the place.. at one point he was holding some random mans hand like he was his grandfather! And D does not like random people.. he doesn't even like familiar people.. especially men.. it was bizarre. He had a blast..and came out have wet since he decided to jump in every puddle.
DeleteWow! I've never been but these photos make me want to go!
ReplyDeleteHi, I just want to invite you to join the RIRE giveaway on my blog
ReplyDeleteNice shots BTW. I love it!
I love Virginia... Such great places to see!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous photos as usual! I've never been to Virginia but we have friends who live there; so hopefully we'll visit one day. The caves look amazing! What a fun trip.
