Hiking in El Chalten
The next morning we left El Calafate and made the two and a half hour drive to El Chalten. Here we were going to be spending the next two days and go on four hikes.

We had booked ourselves a nice little house. With a growing family sometimes a small hotel room just doesn't cut it and if in the same price range we can get a little extra room to spread out I am all for it.
We were there and ready to start hiking by noon. We picked up some wraps to take with us. The first hike started from right behind our hotel so that was perfect.
HIKE ONE - Mirador del Torre - it is described as a relatively easy 4 mile hike. At the end you get to see panoramic views of Cerro Torre, the Adela range, and the Fitzroy River canyon.

We waited a bit. Had our lunch once the rain died down hoping things would clear up a bit.
It was cold and we were tired so we got some dinner and headed to the hotel.
There was a lovely band that was performing. The lead singer was French. She came down to El Chalten for a trip and fell in love with the place and couldn't imagine going back to a corporate job. She met a man who used to play the guitar. She asked him to play again and so they started a local folk band. Isn't that just something?
We started day two with a hotel breakfast and then went off on our first hike of the day. We had to take a short drive to get to all the hikes of the day.
HIKE TWO - Chorrillo del Salto. You could do the 2 hour hike it or you could park in the nearby lot and walk the 20 minutes to see it. We opted for the quick 20 mins.
HIKE THREE - Laguna Capri Hike and Mirador Fitzroy. There was a fee to do this hike. This was a total 5 mile round trip with two viewpoints. The first took us to Laguna Capri and then after a little backtracking and taking a different fork in the road it took us to Mirador Fitzroy.
We sat down to take a break and eat some snacks when the most amazing thing happened. No, the view did not clear up.
This crested caracara landed just a few feet away from us. He was not shy at all and let everyone take pictures of him.
With slightly less long faces we made the way back down to the fork and took the second path... the path to the Mirador Fitzroy.
While still a little foggy the higher elevation of this hike gave us a much nicer view. It was crazy windy.. the kind man who took this picture for us held my phone in a death grip.
Once done we were tired and famished.. we drove back into town. Our next hike was on the other side and we had planned on having a sit down meal to recuperate.
The weather was warming up and clouds dissipating.. fingers crossed it stayed that way for our final hike of the day.
HIKE FOUR - Mirador de Los Cóndores and Mirador de Las Águilas. There was a fee to do this hike. It was included in the other paid hike we did. It was a three hour round trip to do both. We started with Los Condores. Supposedly you can see a lot of condors here. We did not. Along the route they had many informational posts about condors.
The kids and I were tried and didn't feel like continuing on to the second view point. So as we made our way down and M continued onward.
It was wonderful to be able to end the day on a high note. After a refresh we headed out to dinner.
Butch - Bar de Carnes named interestingly after Butch Cassidy.
That evening before returning to our hotel we stopped at the only gas station in town to top off the tank. We had to make a two hour drive the next morning to the airport. To our surprise the gas station was out of gas?! Would there be more in the morning? No. The attendant informed us the next delivery of gas would be tomorrow evening? Can you imagine? The atendant ducked his head into the driver sides window and assured us we had enough to make it to the airport. Thank God we had never let the gas drop below half a tank.. we had been warned via numerous online posts that gas stations were hard to come by.
Now as we leave Patagonia and head to the northern parts of Argentina I must say.. If you had to choose only one side of Patagonia.. Chile vs Argentina.. considering we are not big hikers and only did the more mild trails we would choose Chile. The amount of beauty we saw in Torres del Paine surpassed the beauty of El Chalten. Chile offered more low effort high reward beauty. Those are our favorite kinds of hikes, lol.
Beautiful nature photos and your meals look scrumptious.
ReplyDeleteThis hike looks lovely!

So glad you got a little bit of sun and were rewarded with beautiful clear views. The caracara is interesting and is so pretty!
ReplyDeleteI cannot decide if I like the nature photos or the food photos or the family photos best!! Looks like fun!!
ReplyDeleteThat crested caracara KNOWS it is a STAR! Posing for photos, lol.
ReplyDeleteHiking in rain and high winds, not that pleasant. You do look pleasant in the still photo taken by another person, whom you said held the phone in a death grip. You'd never know, seeing the photo, that it was anything but a very pleasant day and experience. The sunny afternoon mountain peak hike---those rugged spires are dramatic and beautiful!
ReplyDeleteAmazing beauty…one can imagine what is shrouded below the fog. Your boys are real troupers.
ReplyDeleteStrangely enough, a Crested Caracara made it this far north recently in eastern Canada. They are not usual visitors here!
I'm glad that the weather cooperated at least part of the time.
ReplyDeleteYou still saw some beautiful things. I love the bird photos!
ReplyDeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteThe food looks so good.
I have enjoyed this trip so much. I think it is all the weather and how brave you all have been to keep going.
Well done.

What a bummer with the views. It sucks when the weather is uncooperative.
ReplyDeleteHello!
ReplyDeleteWow, those viewpoints offer fantastic views, and it must be beautiful to climb up to them!
The food looks really good, it looks delicious.
Have a great week!
Beautiful scenery and the food looks amazing too.
ReplyDeleteSometimes the weather isn't on our side but you all seem to make the best of things
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos!
ReplyDeleteSorry about the rain, but that picture of the misty, foggy lake looks spectacular!
ReplyDeleteWe get Northern Flickers here a lot and they do remind me of the Chilean Flicker you spied. So neat! Despite the cold and clouds you did get some spectacular scenery! That's crazy about the gas station! Good thing you had enough to get to the airport!
ReplyDeleteLovely to see the photos and it's not easy when travelling to have good weather and clear skies to get a good view, however it looks a nice area with the mountains there. Beautiful views in the last photos. I do know what it's like when travelling and few petrol stations are available, happened to us twice once when in the car and again with the caravan on tow, but we get through it.
ReplyDeleteEl Chaltén looks like an absolute dream for hikers! The landscapes seem unreal, especially with those dramatic mountain backdrops. I love how you captured both the adventure and the practical side of hiking there. This definitely makes me want to lace up my boots and start planning a trip. Thanks for such an inspiring and helpful guide!
ReplyDeleteThat scenery is astounding, even with the cloud cover! How cute are those birds, too? That caracara is like a cartoon character! xxx
ReplyDeleteHello,
ReplyDeleteGreat hikes! The views are beautiful, I love the mountains, waterfall and the lake. Great captures of the birds. I am glad you did not run out of gas. The food looks delicious. Take care, enjoy your day and the week ahead.
What an honest and wonderful look at El Chaltén! It’s a shame the weather didn't always cooperate, but those 'low effort, high reward' views are definitely the best kind. The good ooks amazing.
ReplyDeleteYou always eat the best food! Love these views and cute pics of the birds.

ReplyDeleteEven if the weather wasn't cooperating, it still seems like lovely hikes!
ReplyDeleteLovely scenery and yummy food!
ReplyDeleteThese are such beautiful photos. Looks like you brought good clothes for the rain! Yummy food to refuel!

Bummer you had a few bad hikes where the weather did not want to cooperate, but nice that you were able to have one good hike, with clear views of the mountains, and neat to see some cool birds too! Looks like you had some interesting meals too :). Wow that is scary about the gas situation.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you finally had the chance to see some good views with the clouds clearing! The birds you saw are so neat!
ReplyDeleteYou still managed to find beauty along the way.
ReplyDeleteThe bird photos are a delight!
This looks like quite the hike! (And good pizza!) Yes, traveling with two younger kids makes it tough in a hotel -- all bunking together or getting two rooms and having one kid with one parent, and the other with the other -- which can make different bed times awkward! One day they'll be old enough for two alone (or maybe connecting rooms). But a house is nicer anyway and if not much more, who wouldn't take that option?!
ReplyDeleteYou always seem to find the best food wherever you go! It's wonderful that you can stay cheery even when a hike is disappointing.
ReplyDeleteIt was fortunate the weather cleared up eventually to allow you some fantastic views.
ReplyDeleteIt's too bad about the weather, but it still looks like you saw some beautiful things.
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm glad that you finally got the view you were hoping for. Those mountains are stunning.
ReplyDeleteThat's a great experience with the caracara -- what a striking-looking bird!
what a life...you guys are seeing the world!! as far as the weather goes, it appears when the weather cleared...the views were exceptional!! of course i enjoyed seeing the crested caracara and all the food, thanks so much for including the food pictures!! the kids are getting big, so big...soon they will not be on top of you and you will miss them so much!! gorgeous images!!
ReplyDeleteSuch a scenic hike!
ReplyDeleteSo beautiful.

Wow, a gas station out of gas! That is crazy! Glad you were prepared for that. All the food looks so yummy as usual! I think I would love a vacation where I went and hiked beautiful places like that. That last hike had such gorgeous scenery since you were able to see it. Thanks again for sharing all this with us!

Even with the cloudy views on some of the hikes, it still seems like an incredible adventure. And that crested caracara stopping in to say hello? Priceless!
ReplyDeleteFour nice hikes for you, and the last one was really pretty with the mountains, blue skies, and clouds. The food looks delicious. And the ice cream looks yummy. The crested caracara is unusual looking, and how funny he didn't fly away like some of the other birds, and let you take a picture of him. The waterfalls are pretty. I just visited the waterfalls myself. I like your green sweater. ; )
ReplyDeleteWow! Incredible! That is the one drawback of mountain hiking, it can be crystal clear when you start on your hike and then you get to the top and it's cloudy/raining/snowing. I remember one time we were hiking in Colorado and it was in the 60's and gorgeous. We were wearing shorts, and started hiking and before we knew it, we were caught in a snowstorm. Crazy. I love that bird! I love seeing different birds when I travel.
