Kitchen Renovations - Before and After

When we bought this house eight years ago we knew the kitchen had to go but there was so many other things around the house that needed fixing and it was all much easier than having to live without a kitchen. It wasn't hideous so we made the best of it. In 2013 we had a wall knocked down and opened up the floor plan, put in some new flooring and slapped on a fresh coat of paint. Now that most of the house had been fixed up we knew it was time to take a sledgehammer to that kitchen. And if that wasn't enough the dishwasher only washed sometimes and half the stove didn't heat up, after a leak our floors had started to bubble.. the kitchen was begging for a makeover.

BEFORE

While we were at it we thought some new living room furniture wouldn't hurt. Give the whole space a brand new feeling. But I'll post about that in another post.

IN PROGRESS 

We went to multiple kitchen design places months before any of this started. We had layouts created, looked at cabinets options, the works. Most kitchen design centers sold only cabinets so we were now tasked with finding a contractor as well. Oh and the cabinets would take six months to arrive. We placed an order for black Kith Kitchen Cabinets made in Alabama. Found ourselves a contractor and started to look for tiles, flooring, appliances etc. The only appliance we kept was our refrigerator which we had bought just a few years ago.

We choose wood tiles for the floor in a gorgeous herringbone pattern which I'm sure our contractor cursed us for multiple times. We painted the walls white so that we can add color with accessories and furniture instead.

The cabinets arrived and then all the problems started. We had one missing cabinet, many chipped cabinets and even a couple of broken pieces. So we had to photograph all the damage and request replacements. Until we didn't have all the bottom cabinets we couldn't install the countertop. So now we waited. We got incorrect tracking numbers and then waited some more. When the replacements finally arrived we were appalled to find more damage. We had to order replacements for the replacements! We had to do this more than once.

Sadly, we got to a point where we had to settle. We could not order replacements forever. We got hold of a Kith rep and after much back and forth they issued us a 10% refund. So we made peace with what we had and finally called in the countertop guy. We choose to have a beautiful Calcutta quartz countertop installed. We chose beveled white subway tiles for the backsplash and chrome hardware.
