Where the Crawdad Sings by Delia Owens Synopsis - For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. She's barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark. But Kya is not what they say. Abandoned at age ten, she has survived on her own in the marsh that she calls home. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life lessons from the land, learning from the false signals of fireflies the real way of this world. But while she could have lived in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world--until the unthinkable happens. Thoughts -  This was such a beautiful story. A coming of age tale of being abandoned, loneliness and survival. I really can't say much

Autumn in the Berkshires

Image
Last weekend was a long weekend..we took Friday off as well and went to the Berkshires in Massachusetts. On Friday we drove up to North Adams. We had lunch at A-OK BBQ. It was so so good. The kids had mac and cheese while M and I had the pulled chicken sandwiches. We walked around the area.. discovered a gorgeous shop called Roam selling goods made by African villagers and craftsmen. The Mass MOCA Museum is also located there, unfortunately we could not stop in for a visit :( Before heading out we grabbed coffee and the boys ice cream from Tunnel City Coffee.  Our next stop was Mount Greylock, the highest peak in Massachusetts. The internet informed me that hiking to the summit with small children was not easy so we decided to drive right up to the summit.  While on Greylock we decided to hike to Stony Ledge, a rocky outcropping offering scenic vistas of the Greylock mountain range. Google said it was a 30 minute walk to the vista point.. but it took us much longer.. the hike was less

Little Fires and a Curse So Dark and Lonely

Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng Synopsis- I n Shaker Heights, a placid, progressive suburb of Cleveland, everything is planned--from the layout of the winding roads, to the colors of the houses, to the successful lives its residents will go on to lead. And no one embodies this spirit more than Elena Richardson, whose guiding principle is playing by the rules.  Enter Mia Warren--an enigmatic artist and single mother--who arrives in this idyllic bubble with her teenaged daughter Pearl, and rents a house from the Richardsons. Soon Mia and Pearl become more than tenants: all four Richardson children are drawn to the mother-daughter pair. But Mia carries with her a mysterious past and a disregard for the status quo that threatens to upend this carefully ordered community. When old family friends of the Richardsons attempt to adopt a Chinese-American baby, a custody battle erupts that dramatically divides the town--and puts Mia and Elena on opposing sides. Suspicious of Mia and her mot

Canandaigua Lake, New York

Image
Just before the start of school we decided to take a break and get away. We had been thinking about doing something of the sort all summer but were unsure, when we finally decided to go ahead with it everything within a 3 hour radius was booked. We were only willing to go to safe states so Pennsylvania and New York seemed like our best bests. I expanded my search to the Finger Lakes district in Upstate New York and couldn't believe our lucky stars when I found a cute little place on VRBO in Canandaigua Lake with a pool! Yippee!! It was approx 5 hours away.. so we thought to break up the trip with a horse back ride once we crossed into New York. We had never done one before and H is finally of a age where some companies allow him to ride a trail. Unfortunately it rained the whole afternoon.. so that was cancelled.. :( Other than that little hiccup everything else was thankfully smooth sailing.. The House We spent a lot of time in the pool.. well they did.. I spent a lot of time read
