36 Hours in Boston

For Memorial Day Weekend we planned to leave town for a few days.. we weren't sure how my ankle would be doing by that time so didn't want to book flights plus we were travelling with the boys and my in laws... The weather has been all over the place so a beach vacation was out of the question.. in the end we thought Boston would be the perfect destination. But as the weekend got closer the forecast showed rain and we were on the fence about the whole thing.. Thankfully mother nature was on our side and we left Friday afternoon to beat the rush.. well some of it at least.

We checked in to the AC Marriott in Medford. Something to always keep in mind when travelling.. if you have a car then finding a hotel outside the city is often a better option.. It was just a 15 minute drive plus we got free parking..

Saturday morning we woke to a beautiful sunny day and started our day with a great big breakfast at Friendly Toast

We followed up breakfast by walking around MIT mainly to capture this beautiful building.. The Ray and Maria Stata Center designed my Frank Gehry

After MIT we drove over to Harvard.. having never gone to a college with dorms and the experience of being on our own, there was an excitement when walking through the Harvard yard. It was graduation weekend and there were graduates and their families everywhere.. You can't blame us for imagining our own little D one day walking the Harvard halls.

After a bit of wandering about we made our way to Harvard Square where we spotted the Curious George Store!

The day turned out to be hot so we cooled down with a few Italian ices.. nothing is better than the lemon one.

Then D and I snuck into the Harvard Book Store to explore.. we found a great fact filled state book he liked.

We bid farewell to Cambridge and drove by Fenway Park before heading to get a bite to eat. We stopped by the much highly rated 169 4.5 star yelp reviews to be exact Gyro City. What a disappointment.. on the hot sweltering day they had no air conditioning on and it just seemed so uninviting.. we were looking for halal options for the in laws instead we opted to go next door to Fiouna’s Persian Fusion Cuisine.. still nothing to write home about but good enough.

Next stop Newbury Street.. we strolled along the shop lined street.. D on the search for ice cream Emack and Bolios in particular.. H on the mission to pet every dog that he saw..

When we finally found Emack and Bolio's they were already sold out of all there special cereal cones.. only two chocolate oreo ones remaining.. and 5 of us :( Plus on this very hot day the ice cream shop was like a sauna.. we finally picked our ice creams, already melting before our first lick.. delicious but if only they had more cones and the shop hadn't been so uncomfortable..

With are bellies full of ice cream and are feet in need of a break we made our way to Boston Common and the Public Garden

Bubbles, carousels and chasing squirrels had everyone ready for dinner. We drove in circles around Anna's Taqueria before we finally decided that I'd hop out of the car to place an order and just eat at the hotel if M didn't find a parking spot.. he didn't.. we ate at the hotel.. the food was amazing.. even when 20 minutes old. And since we were quietly stuffing our faces in our room there are no pictures.

Day 2 started off a bit chilly.. we had forgotten to pack hoodies and cardigans.. so we were just gonna suck it up! We had breakfast at Anthony's Waterfront Cafe, a good simple cash only kinda place.. good food. After breakfast we began to explore the North End. Strolled by the waterfront, played in the park, shopped in Quincy Market and the many beautiful streets

We stopped to grab a bite to eat at Benevento and devour two delish pizzas. We stopped by Mike's Pastry to pick up a few cannoli's before leaving..

But before we got to the cannoli's we needed to get to the museum of science to catch a Duck Tour. We are not tour people, we don't do hop on and off buses but so many people told us we had to do the Duck Bus.. so we did the duck bus. We had a great conductor Almost Educated Aron and it was a nice funny tour.. learnt some cool facts and best of all the WWII style amphibious vehicle goes into the water too.. and guess who got to drive?

the highlight of his trip.. since Aron found his name to hard to pronounce he was referred to as Walter.. and yes he is wearing two hats..

And with this we concluded our trip.. we drove back Sunday afternoon and where able to spend Monday relaxing at home. Oh and not to forget.. Mike's Pastry

Pistachio, chocolate and not sure what the last one was.. the pistachio was sooo good.. the chocolate I didn't even get to taste, the kids had dibs on that one. Perfect for the drive home.

  3. It looks like such a nice trip! I love trips like that, short, sweet and packed with activities. I love Boston too; I went to college near Boston and relished every opportunity to get into the city. I'm glad to hear the Curious George store is still there! That was one of my favorite stops. :)

  4. Your family travels are always jam-packed with fun activities...thanks for sharing:) I actually wanted to go to Harvard for uni and even had the application package, but alas, being Canadian, it was out of reach financially even with aid. Maybe the kiddos someday....:D

  7. Wow! What a great trip. Boston is a favorite city of mine and it looks like you made the most of your time there. As much as traveling to distant lands is great fun, there's something to be said about a road trip - so many pluses like packing as much as you want and going on your terms rather than the airlines' terms. Fun! Fun!

What a cool trip, Hena. I love how you make sure your older son's interests are included in the itinerary. I would love to get out to Boston one day. I love its history and I always think of Paul Revere. Hard to convince the husband to fly out that far; I'll work on him.

  25. My husband visited Boston for an office conference when we lived in Canada and loved it. Promised he'd take us there as a family - but since we lived in Western Canada, and lived intervened and we found ourselves back in the UK - we never made it. Sounds as though a good time was had by all. Discovered you while posting myself on Blogging Buddies - great to meet you.
