Ponies and Ferries

We left Virginia Beach early, we had a lot to do that day.. but even when in a hurry you still need breakfast. So we grabbed egg and cheese sandwiches on the go from Java Surf.. it looked like a fun hangout place.. books, instruments and board games lined the shelves and the menu was written on surf boards..

We grabbed our breakfast and hit the road. Destination: Chincoteague Island and how to get there? The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. It reminded me of the roads taken to get to Key West but so much better. It was early Friday morning so there was hardly anyone on it.. it was 23 miles of bridge and tunnel surrounded by the great blue sea.

Pictures just do not do it justice.

Waiting for us on Chincoteague Island was a boat. Daisy's Cruises. I can not express just how perfect this trip was. The tour was of seven people including the captain and tour guide Tom. He does not take out large groups, he likes the two hour tours to be intimate and comfortable.

The weather was gorgeous, the sun shinning the wind blowing. The boat took us to Assateague Island where wild ponies live. Kayaking seemed like a much more up close and personal experience with the ponies, maybe when D is older.

D assisted in driving the boat and now that he had touched a sheep he was up for touching just about everything else including running after the adorable dog (the first mate) and even a blowfish!

At the end of the two hours we hopped into our car and drove off in order to catch the next boat.. unfortunately we were short on time and when we tried to stop at the nearby deli to grab some lunch the deli was so beyond slow that I had to leave without the sandwiches hoping we would be able to get to Lewes, Delaware in time to get our ferry to Cape May. We made it, thank god.. and got a quick lunch from the cafeteria in the ferry station. The meal was average, really what could you expect but I wanted to make sure I mentioned that the service was impeccable. The women working there knew we were running late and went out of there way to make sure I got everything I needed and more.

It was an 85 minute ferry that cut down our travel time by our 50% and everyone got a break from the car. The ride was fairly uneventful except for one little incident.

During a game of peekaboo/running around the benches D decided it would be fun to crawl through this little opening between the backs of two benches! He had fun, he crawled through decades of bacteria and things I can not even imagine but I thank god he crawled through it and did not decide to stop mid way for a little rest. Eew.

From Cape May we drove to Ocean City.. which I will share with you in my coming post.. a lot more more firsts for D and even a few firsts for M and I..

To all my fellow America readers.. Happy Fourth of July..

  2. Seeing D crawling though those benches made me panic a bit. I don't like seeing kids escaping and out of my reach.
And at first, with 7 people on that tour, all you needed was another hour and it was almost like the beginning of Gilligan's Island! You do know what I'm talking about, right?

    1. Funny.. that's what our tour guide said.. he even played the theme song towards the end of the trip. :) Imagine how we felt when D decided to slip through the gap.. it was the longest 30 seconds.. and then he wanted to do it again.

  9. I think I accidentally went across that bridge when we missed the turn to Annapolis once on vacation. It was a pretty mistake. :)

You should just consider D's crawl through the muck as boosting his immune system. It looks gross though...

  24. Ah seeing what little D did reminded me of the time when my baby nephew crawled underneath a bench on the street - and when he emerged, his hands were green with bird poo! So gross haha. Anyway, I'm enjoying your travel posts - so exciting! xx
